  • Shipping a car from overseas

I'll be picking up a car when info to Europe in September to travel around in. The plan is to bring it back here at the end of my trip.

Do any of you guys have experience with this?

I'll be finishing my travels in Dublin, which has a pretty big shipping dock, or would it be better to ship from the uk?

Also, where would you reccomend to ship it to? East/west coast? How much would a car carrier from the east cost to bring a car here?

Well first your car is gonna have to be 15 years old I think or is it 25? Shipping probably between 1500-3500$, depends from and to where, to halifax it will be cheaper. Then you have 2 methods of shipping, roll on/roll off so basically think of the ship like a big ass ferry going across the ocean, or you can ship your car in a container for more security/protection but that costs more. Its cheaper if you can find a shared container, so you use half of the container, and someone else is using the other half.

Car will be 15 years old. I understand it will be cheaper to ship to the east, but will the total cost be cheaper considering that I'll be needing a transport truck to bring it here once it reaches Canada?

I would do that but I'm coming back in November and I'm sure the car will take a couple months to arrive.

Don't feel like driving across the country in the middle of winter

I think it would be more like drifting across the country.

You could have the car transported by rail once it is landed.

Re: Shipping a car from overseas

the cheapest is going to be to RoRo the car.
If you can get the car to Rotterdam that will actually be your cheapest route.

If you go out of Rotterdam it should only take a few weeks ot hit the eastern seaboard then have it railed to Calgary. That will be far cheaper than any other method.

You can call a few companies that will take care of the logistics for you door to door but they charge for their services.

If you arent planning on travelling over to get it, cars are much cheaper from Japan if you can find your Euro-love... thats where the RS2 in Calgary came from. The older cars in Japan are subject to very strict emissions guidelines, so they are often junked instead of fixed and kept. Im dreaming of a B5 RS4 as well...
