  • Windshield chip repair gone wrong.....

Two days ago I stoped at a DECO windshield repair tent (the orange ones you see at grocery stores and hardware stores) to get a small chip filled near the top right corner of my windshield.

I figured, this place is probably just as good as any other windshield joint so why not.....what could possibly go wrong? I was very wrong.

While the guy was fixing my chip, he scrapped the paint on my roof (where the windshield and roof meet). It's a deep scratch that is approx. 3 inches long. I then tell the guy and he says "Ooops...I'm really sorry....thats has never happened before....I'm embarrassed" blah blah blah. I then calmly asked to speak to his boss. He then provides me with his boss' card and gave me all of his own info.

Shortly after, I speak to the boss and he tells me that it's not a big deal and that a touch up pen will work fine. I then explain to him that I would not accept a touch up pen and would prefer that a professional take care of it. He then tells me to get a few quotes and to call him back.

Today I met up with him and show him the quotes I received from two reputable autobody shops. He freaks out when he sees that one shop quoted $1700 and the other $1100.

He then tells me that he will not pay to have my roof re-sprayed. I told him that I did not ask the shops to quote me for a full roof re-spray and that they decided it would be best. He still refuses to pay.

I then ask him for his insurance company info and he tells me that they do not have coverage for these damages as the premium is too high. He said they only have windshield liability.

He then tells me that I could take him to court, but I would probably lose because he has been through this before and won. He said that the Judge did not feel a scratch waranted a full roof re-spray.

He then tells me that his buddy has a mobile scratch repair company and that he can mix my paint code on my driveway and fix it at my house. I tell him that I don't trust that method. He then said it's the only way he will fix it OR if I can find a much cheaper quote that does not require full paint.

    Any advice?

Wow that is terrible. Sounds like you handled it well, much better than I would have. Definitely keep at it and post the results. That just baffles me that they don't have anything but insurance for windshield damage. There are any number of ways an employee could damage a car from scratching it with their belt buckle as they are leaning over to dropping equipment on the car.

I really hope this works out for you. I agree I wouldnt want some random guy who can do it cheap while you wait trying to fix something like that. If two places recommend a respray I definitely agree you shouldn't settle for anything less.

I'd be surprised if they don't have coverage, he may have fed you that line in order to get you off his back.

Rather than deal with that guy any further, I decided to call the DECO Franchise Head Office. They seemed to be a little more helpful, but have not stated that they will pay to fix it the proper/more expensive way.

Their last email stated "The amount we will pay to have the damage repaired will be an amount we deem to be fair and reasonable". The "we" part of this statement concerns me the most.

I hate the fact that they beleive they have the last say.

It is franchise based as well, I know I scanned their site to try and find any information about what they cover under their service.

I was at Home Depot a few years ago picking up some fence boards with my truck. The forklift guy had a brain freeze and crushed my tailgate. Home Depot offered me 50% of the repair costs due to the fact that my truck was around 7 years old (but the tailgate was in perfect working order with no prior damage). I talked to them a few times but there were firm in their position. I contacted my insurance company who told me not to worry about it and directed me get it repaired they they would deal with Home Depot. Really we all pay a lot of money to insurance companies so it is nice to have them provide some assistance/service back to you.
