I kind of agree with this. I'm sure there were people that went just because they thought something would happen and wanted to experience it and for no other reason. No, not to watch the game. My understanding is the vast majority is you couldn't even see the game on those screens.

            Re: Y U mad Vancouver?

It likely will never make the news here or across the rest of the world where the riot images were shown, but here is proof to how Vancouver ACTUALLY feels about what happened that night.
Anyone that thinks the city wanted this is out to lunch.

An E.R. nurse addresses the apology of Tim Kwong:

Tim: Just because you can string an apologetic sentence together does not mean you are sorry. Perhaps I should make you aware of the consequences of your action. To you, it’s just an overturned car that you set on fire. To me, it’s walking into an overflowing ER and helping treat a girl with a severe asthma attack because she was exposed to the noxious, acrid smoke of a burning vehicle. To her, it was just a chance to be a part of a group cheering for her team. Little did she know that later on, we were thinking of sticking a breathing tube down her throat if her condition did not improve.

To you (yes, I am lumping you with all the douchebag rioters in the ER that night), it’s a chance to congregate in the ER waiting room, pounding on the triage window demanding to be seen for teargas exposure and cuts from looting and fighting, while posturing and bragging about how you kicked the crap out of somebody and smashed **** up. To me, it’s taking my time away from the little old quiet lady having chest pain or taking time away from the person you “****-kicked” for trying to stop the looting.

To you, it’s just a fight. To me, it’s the ER social worker looking for a teddybear to console a four-year-old girl because she just witnessed her dad get a broken nose as he was trying to get his daughter out of the hotzone.

To you, it’s writing a letter saying you "will do whatever it takes to help clean the city.” To me, it’s walking home after a long shift and seeing all these people at 7:30 in the morning armed with garbage bags cleaning up YOUR mess and realizing that these people have more class in their pinky finger than you could ever muster in your whole life.

To me, it’s getting home to shower, only to have my elderly neighbour knock on my door and ask me if he should make an appointment to see his doctor because he was experiencing shortness of breath, which later turned to chest pain in the morning. He did not think about leaving his window open as he went to bed at 9 o’clock. The smoke from all the burning cars made it to our building, into his room and triggered his asthma, which then raised his heart rate, which then became a small heart attack. I asked him why he didn’t go to the ER, and he answered, “I turned on the TV this morning and saw the rioting, I did not want to be a burden.”

To you, it’s just an overturned car that you set on fire.

Why am I blaming you for all this? Because you are the instigator. You ask people to leave your family, friends and co-workers alone? I think they need to know how much of a [expletive] you are. Remember that your parents worked themselves to the bone so they can move to this country and give you your god-given right to flip cars over and set them on fire.

You, Tim Kwong — apology not accepted.

            — from an E.R. nurse

The above letter by Nurse J.J. was in response to Tim Kwong’s apology, which is reprinted (unedited) below:

A Letter of Appoligy to Vancouver and Family and Friends Hey Everyone ! The status is : I Turned myself in to the VPD today at 12 p.m. I am now being charged on four counts. I will do whatever it takes to help out and clean this town up and do what i can to prevent actions like this from ever happening in our town again. I know I deserve all the hate ! but please be respectful and don’t hate on any of my friends or family or co workers since these actions are only caused by ME and ME only !!!! Again SORRY VANCOUVER ! Good read Andrew. I really hope that ALL of the exposure, regarding last week, has a positive impact for the future. Bottom line is, it was a sad outcome!

What bothers me the most from that apology letter, is how poorly it is written. Use a period, once in a while.

What does publicly shaming/jailing these people accomplish?

At least that applogy didn't go on about mob mentalitly and quoting all types out sources then go on to list the canadian charter of rights. Then continue on to attack back at some rude comments towards her. In the end she looked even worse for her actions and the whole appology looks like one big excuse.

The fact of the matter is many of those who did these acts are untouchable by canadian law. They are under 19, qualify for the YOA and have no priors. So for their part in the riots they will likely just receive a fine, and maybe some community service. We'll never know their names or who they are, and when you sit beside them on the bus or have them in front of you in a job interview you dont know what they did.

Publically naming these kids, having their friends and family know what they did, their bosses, their coaches, their teachers is FAAAAR better punishment I believe than jail would ever be. Their reputation is tarnished and there are REAL consequences for their actions. I strongly believe that this riot wasn't just a random thing, but more a display of how our society as a whole is going down the toilet. Kids these days have no consequences for their actions and so they keep on committing them.

You tell me whats worse. Having mom and dad pay your $1000 fine, or your face and name on the paper, losing your scholarship, and having your olympic dream destroyed.
Do i really want that kid representing Canada at the olympics after what he did?

                      Re: Y U mad Vancouver?

                      Fair enough.

I couldn't agree more on that whole no consequence thing.

After spending time in residence, having had a lot of fun, there were so many times kids just took things too far because there was no risk. You could always just sweet talk your way out of anything. Same in grade school, you could miss deadlines, ignore any sort of project, if you were smart enough to formulate a good enough excuse, and promised to do it later. Bit tougher in Post, but still doable. Even being graded on a curve, you can, not study or put any effort into the class, knowing full well everyone else will have done the same, and just ride the curve. Or hell, just watch the news, and see which celebrity has gotten off of some crime.

Going to be neat to see what sort of lasting effect this will have on these people. That second apology is hilarious. "I am sorry, but **** you" is how that whole thing comes across.

I really wish these apologies were better written, obviously just written in a panic, and published quickly. Also demonstrates how shitty out society has become.

Also kind of neat to read, as it allows you to understand how that person has gotten out of consequence in the past. The chick always used 'facts', blame shifting, and going more on the attack of her attackers.

The other kid, just makes false promises, and begs.

These kids dont even know what an apology really is.
Apology is owning up for what you did. Full stop.

it's not saying the word sorry, then trying to justify your actions, show why you were right and get the last word in.

These kids used the mob to commit their acts and hide their faces, and now they are pissed when that same mob is turning on them? I'm sorry but NO. I'm tired of kids living without consequences, doing stupid **** and getting off just cause. What these clowns did had real world lasting effects, it tarnished a cities reputation and destroyed millions of dollars in property, as well as ruining what should have been an otherwise happy and somber night for hundreds of thousands of fans who were just there to watch a hockey game no matter what the score was.

i agree. but we walk a fine line. When the masses start resorting to violence and threats instead of just outting these dicks they are then no better than the clowns flipping cars in the first place and using the masses to hide their identity.
