  • For all the Dance/Trance/House fans

So this is a long shot but, have any of you out there played around with making this kind of music? I've been playing with a few software programs (ReBirth, an older version of Reason ('cause the new one is $460US!! but waaaaay sweeter!), etc ). I guess I'd just like to know if there are people out there doin this and also to say how totally amazing "Reason" is, it's made by Propellerheads in Sweden. It is sooo cool, and if you guys are out there, check it out. I'd also like to expand my horizons so if anyone knows of other good software I'd love to hear about it.

Also, I'm looking to find good forums or sites dealing with this kind of music (I found a couple but they are not quite what I'm looking for). So anyway, I'm well on my way as soon as I get a Midi keyboard and new computer (in the works). My ultimate goal will be to get one of my songs on "Clubtracks" It's prolly gonna take me a year or so tho to get something thats of any degree of good as my music theory is a bit rusty (that's right, Electronic is music too!! Well Aphex twin might be a stretch, haha sorry Simon, Kris, had to throw that in there!)

    Thanks all
    Jason

Hey! Aphex Twin has some pretty "out there" tracks but others are very mellow! I have decided to provide one of their more famous songs as an example, just right-click to save as a file, and rename it to .mp3

My brother spent a lot of time messing with that kind of software, but he was eventually frustrated by its limitations and decided that he would need to spend more money on equipment to really get where he wanted to go. Congrats on your start!

Yes I wish you luck Jason and I sure hope one day I can put a track of yours on a Club Tracks CD. I hear Reason is one of the best pieces of software out there, but I think you need to experiment and just find out what works for you.

I am more into the djing, mixing aspect as opposed to the creating and producing but maybe one day we can team up to make some great tunes

        Thanks Kris, Blair.

Yea, grasping the depth of the software will be a bit of an undertaking (A regular Reason user "Symbiont" used 65 different pieces of equipment in their "Virtual Rack"!!) but I think i'm up for the challenge.

Kris, I knew you were a Aphex twin fan, I was just buggin. I'd like to hear that song you have but the link wouldn't work for me, I'll try it again when I get home. They do have some very cool sounds they are just not (from the little bit I've heard) in a format or flow that I can adjust too. So i'll check out that tune when I get a chance.

Oh yeah I forgot to change the permissions Although this song is the furthest from Dance/House/Trance genres that I can think of!

Just checked it out. It's pretty good I liked it. To be honest I really liked it when he cut out some of the beats (I felt the same way with some of the other stuff I heard of Aphex) but the beats are prolly what make it appealing to most people. The beats are amazing for their complexity tho, Man. It's like a lesson in how many different time signatures you can operate in without derailing the song!! But I can say, I'd add that to a collection. It makes me curious what kind of gear he/they use. Thanks for enlightenment Kris!! I'm always up for checking out new music.

I have played around with reason and rebirth a little .. f**king sweet program but takes some serious skill i think there is another out there called logic that is good don't know for sure if its the same kinda program but its been endorsed by some of the biggest Dj's, and is now owned by apple.

Yea, I was actually a little discouraged when I started playing with ReBirth cause it was so complicated and in realtime too (I can't think that fast ) but after playing with Reason a bit it's waaaaay easier to stop, edit, cut paste, punch, etc. more like a profesional recording software, plus you can all the tools from ReBirth in Reason (TB-303, 308 and (I think) as many Synths as you can handle. I'll check out that program if apple owns it it must be good (I'll see what the PC guys have to say about that one, hehe), Blair mentioned Cakewalk too, I've heard of it but don't know anything about it.

Re: For all the Dance/Trance/House fans

I've played with Rebirth before, but not Reason. Logic and Cakewalk are more audio production applications. They are like whole studios in a software package. To my knowledge they don't do any synthesis on their own, but take tracks made in apps like Rebirth and Reason and then you can combine those tracks with vocals, other instruments if you like... add effects. They are also MIDI controllers so you can do complete sequencing with external rackmount synthesizers, keyboards, lighting systems, etc. Logic/Cakewalk are the glue that holds everything together.

sorry, actually, I meant Simon L. Didn't know YOU were an Aphex fan. Guess I just figured the parties involved/not involved would know.

Sorry man. I'll specify next time.

Oh and Bill, Reason does all the mixing and midi and whatnot but you can also create your own loops right in it and add it into your song. It's really cool. Imagine all that hardware you were tallking about being "virtual" and infinite in number then mixing it all down and adding external inputs such as Keys, guitar, etc. It can do it all within one program. It can also sample and sync external loops or whatever.

And thanks for the help all.

hey np. on where? their message board? no. i never used the program before. i just know it exists and what it does. everytime i'm in poland and are watching some music channel, like VIVA (my favourite (www.viva.tv)) or MTV2POP (www.mtv2pop.de) they advertise that Ejay program like all the time during commercials. so thats why i suggested it.

                            edit: btw, here's whats hot now ( dancefloorcharts > http://www.mtv.de/dancefloorcharts/i...ts&groupie=29& )

haha no problem, the parties involved/not involved were well aware of who you meant, but I was bored, so I felt I had to put my $0.02
