  • Lapping Session - Race City

    Doing my first lapping night of 2 tonight at Race City. So far, I have:
    - Pumped up all my tires by about 5-6psi;
    - Cranked all the KW V2's to "Ow, ow... my back" setting;
    - Emptied out all unnecessary weight from the car (except for the boat anchor VR6); and
    - Practised my heel toe'ing for the last couple of days.

    Any other tips fellas!

    If they have an instructor there, it is definitely worth having them ride along with you to show you the proper lines... and take it easy for the first few laps!

        It's a Track Techniques session with Jay Pringle and his guys. Friend of mine is a close pal of Jay's so convinced me to come out for a couple of nights. Will definitely see about the ride-along thing. And yes... the plan is to take it easy. Since I believe I'm the only VW out there... no sense in going crazy as the Porsche Turbo's will be lapping me all night long anyways!

          Just remember that the Jay Pringle taught line thru 2/3 is the slower way around the track.

                Re: Lapping Session - Race City

                The general consensus on the 1-2-3 complex is that you give up turn 2 line in favor of turning in later on 1 (making the straight longer/faster) and then letting you go out wide on the entrance to 3 making a longer drive off the corner since you are flat out or almost flat out from the exit of 3 all the way to the chicane before the back straight. So you give up 2 because its just a corner between two corners while 1 is a corner after a straight and 3 is a corner before a straight (even tho there are corners after 3 its pretty much a straight ie flat out).

                I believe he teaches to keep a good line thru 1 and 2 and throw away 3 as it's such slow corner so you will be faster in that sector but you will lose top speed at the end of the 4-5-6. His line gets you few kph faster thru turn 2(Short corner) but will lose you more kph by the time your reach the end of 6 (long fast corner).

                And my line is a bastard of what ever the hell i can hold at the speed i am going.

                PS. I suck on the exit of 3 no mater what line i take so it doesn't really matter to me.

                  I'm curious what kind of speeds do people see on the long straight?

                    I was pretty much at the top of 4th, so 190-200km/h for me.

                        Re: Lapping Session - Race City

                        depending on how deep you want to drive into the corners 210+.
                        Last year my neighbor in his scurderia had us going into 1 at just around 230 but that was braking very deep.

                        I agree rogers sentiment on 1-2-3.
                        Keeping close on 2 so you can get nice and wide on 3 gives you a lot more speed coming out of 3 and through 4-5-6.
                        The dip in 4-5 now though makes things a little more interesting as you really need to pick your line and ensure the car is settled properly. If not the dip seems to upset everything and leaves you all kinds of weird for 6 heading down the straight to the chicane.

                        It's hard to not go out there and try and wrestle the car round to start because YOURE ON A RACE TRACK! but if you can start off slower, get the lines right, rather than trying to drive fastest corner to corner and leaving yourself out of line, you'll find its a lot better.
                        If you dont have a ride along, following others who are good drivers around the track is always a good way to find the braking points and lines.

                        As for setup. I dont know what PSI you run in your tires on the street, but i'd throw maybe 38psi in there. You can always adjust once you get to the track. You'll want to keep an eye on your sidewall when you come in from lapping. If you're noticing you are getting wear from the tread to the sidewall get a little more air in there. Also use your cool down lap effectively, keeping the revs low, and allowing the car to cool down while there is still airflow to the rad. Your car will appreciate it a lot more than the guys who hot lap directly to the pits and then idle for a minute or pretty much shut right down

                            A little note when i was out there last weekend the track got roughed up pretty bad as the Porsche guys where there on Saturday then we had the race license course on the Sunday course break ups where
                            Turns (Track Issue)
                            1 (big pothole right before the apex)
                            2 (the whole thing)
                            6 (at the exit just after the apex)
                            7 (outside edge at turn in)
                            10 (outside at the exit near the wall i have no idea who was driving that line)
                            11 (at the exit going onto the straight next to the rumble strips big pothole opened up)
