So my buddy has an older Shaw PVR that has a ton of movies and concerts on it (currently renting the device). He now wants to get a new unit with and external HD. So how does he go about archiving the old stuff into a playable format onto his computer? or better yet onto the new external HD so he can have it for the new PVR.

short answer, you cant.
the PVR ends up formatting your drive when you plug it in, if there is anything foreign on it before or after, it reformats. Pain in the ass.Team Highschool

You have to hit play on the old PVR and record on something connected to it. I have a little Archos that I use for that purpose. It has a 60 GB HDD and records video in a standard avi format. Sadly you have to do real time ie 5 hours of movie equals 5 hours of recording. If you had a computer with a capture card or even many video cameras you could also do this.2004 VW Jetta TDI SportComment

The only way I have found to do it is to play it off of the PVR onto a Hauppage HD PVR plugged into a Computer. Then it recording video real time.Comment

yah motorola is smarter than i thought. those boxes are de2 encryped on the drive. even if u took the drive out, u wouldn't have the key to decrypt the data. the dac guys say there was a usb dongle u could buy called "the remover" but the product was discontinued.
also, if the video was recorded using firewire, it would be non-encrypted and readable from the drive.
so yah, you're buddy will have to re-record all of the videos to a new pvr.
this was told to me by the dac guys at shaw. i've been contracting here for the past few months, so u get it right from the source
