  • Computer hard drive recovery

I've got a drive on its last legs with ALL my photography stuf on it.

I've got it on ice right now cooling down, its in an external case.
The computer can see it at power up but it keeps giving me disk drive errors.

I dont want to chance killing it.

Does anyone know of anyone that can help me recover the files and move them to a new drive?

mozy is kind of expensive when hard drives are so cheap. you can build a server with redundancy for the price of like 2 years of service.
i've got 500+ GB I need to back up. A 1TB HD is $60. Even if I just copy that onto a harddrive that then sits in a drawer and is only ever accessed again if my drive goes down im cheaper.

The trick is to actually do it, frequently. Wife and I each have a folder on the others machine, xcopy daily. Then I have an external that I do about every week or so. Then there's another 500gb at my office that I copy every month or two. Playstation3 has it's own 80gb spare. Drives are cheap. Data is not.

I have three hard drives with all my ****. 2 are mirrors at the house in case one dies and one I update once a month and it lives in my moms cellar at her house so in case my house blows up or gets robbed I have all my pics and vids off site......

Exactly what Geoff said, I'd rather pay a few dollars then lose my kids memories

I picked up a DLINK NAS (dns-323) and a pair of 1TB drives that are mirrored. I plugged that in to an UPS. Pretty happy with it. It will email me if one of the two drives fails. I'm thinking I will pick up a USB drive to keep an off-site copy. There are a lot of decent NAS set ups with good redundancy and they are not too expensive out there.

x2 on Popp. I have every picture copied to a secondary hard drive in my desktop, then to my laptop, then to a portable drive that goes to my office not to mention everything goes up to Smugmug.com (http://www.smugmug.com/photos/photo-...ites-compared/) after every day of shooting. Smugmug has every single digital photo I have taken since 1999. I don't care how may times you backup or to where you are bound to lose a hard drive somewhere. And heaven forbid if your house burns down or your computer gets stolen.

BTW if you toast a CF or SD card here is the best tool I think to recover it: http://www.piriform.com/recuva. I even recovered a 4GB CF card that had 3.8GB of photos that was accidentally formatted in camera twice.

Use the backup feature to backup to a secondary drive and use the sync to backup to an external drive to take offsite. If you need help setting up a backup strategy shoot me a PM.

Recuva doesn't always work. I've used this in the past as well and it worked on a number of occasions, but not all the time.

andrew mozy is well worth it for peace of mind if your house burn't down or something.. thats how i look at it.. whenever i got on my long haul vacations i actually take all my drives and put them in our safety deposit box just to be safe/paranoid too

you could look at a mirror'd mybook unit too or if you don't mind the $ buy a drobo unit and use that.. they aren't great but work well for what they do..

also mozy (EMC) changed their pricing models in the last few months.. the plan i'm on originally is like 7/month for unlimited storage.. so i'm on that for another 1.5 years and then it'll update to the new pricing model..

im actually in the process of putting a NAS together, thats why this is pissing me off cause 3 weeks from now this wou;dn't have been an issue.

                            oh well.
hopefully i can get this stuff recovered, the computer still sees the drive and can copy stuff but i get a disk error often. im just gonna leave it and see if MoreSpeed can gimme a hand with it.
