When I used to drive the audi in the winter, once spring hit, I would spend a day and pull the fender liners and skirts etc and flush everything out. That fine gravel/sand mix gets in the smallest area. Heck I even resorted to pulling the rear seat and the covers for the tank access and vacuum and clean the top of the tank around the pump. Can you say anal!
