  • Selling Woes

So I have been trying to sell my quad since about November. I was seriously interested in a car when I listed it. The car is since long gone and my ads are still up all over the place. The price is well below market value as I was trying to move it fast.

I have been dealing with a guy from Vancouver over the last week or so. He has not tried to barter with the price, but asked that maybe I could meet him halfway in Kamloops (I am in Golden). I said sure for the right price. Yesterday he said it was all good to go for this Saturday and confirmed the price. When I asked about compensation for my fuel and time he sounded shocked. I told him that it would be $100 in fuel plus my time. He was pretty upset. Offered me $50 and I said no.

He is now "thinking about it". I guess my question is, am I in the wrong? I am no longer in a desperate need to sell my quad at all. It will sell for much more in the spring and probably easier. I am thinking that I am going to tell him that I am not willing to meet anymore and that he can come pick it up if he likes. What are your thoughts?

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush...

There is a chance if you hold out until spring you'll get more money, but what if you don't. What if a sweet car pops up for cheap but you can't pull the trigger because you have money tied up in your quad? I guess the question to ask is whether you want to just get it done with, or hold out for what is probably a better price in the spring.

      Re: Selling Woes

Here's my view on this, you agreed to meet him if it was for the "right price". Meaning if you'd get what your asking or a reasonable offer for your quad. If you didn't bring this up in the first place when he first mentioned to you "hey wanna meet me half way bud?", then you're out of luck. You can either do it as favour, meet him, sell your quad or next time make the buyer aware that you'd like to be reinbursed for your travel time/gas. If I were the one buying this quad and you'd then ask me to pay you $100 + travel time I'd probly laugh at you and say good luck with the sale. He actually sounds reasonable and was nice enough to offer you $50. I'd take it and be happy I got rid of the quad...but that's just me.

When you agree with something like this, whether it's verbal or in writing, you need to stick by it and not change it after because you're not sticking to your word and violating the agreement.

        Re: Selling Woes

The price was firm and he knew that. So when I say for the right price I am stating that it would have to be worth my time. I have zero interest in traveling 8 hours round trip to sell my quad. I do not need to sell it now at all. I am going to tell him that he can come pick it up if he likes, but I am not willing to travel anymore at all.

you're in breach of contract, he could sue you technically. because you agreed and then tried to change the terms of the deal, you lose bro.

Offer to have it shipped over there if he doesn't want to pay for your gas? (on him, of course)

$100 seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Man, I really wanted to trade you when I had my Jetta. Not sure why you changed your mind since you were the one that offered. Too bad, I'd have a quad and you would have a sweet car.

I drove further than that to sell my Volvo, I took the guy at his word that he would buy it. Luckily he kept his word. I agree with others, depends if you want your quad gone, for me, if someones reasonable with me, I'll be more willing to deal just because I don't have to deal with the Kijiji crap and lowballers.

When I said for the right price, we hadn't agreed on the price. the only price was the one in my ad that said firm. Nothing had been discussed about price.

If you don't NEED to sell it now, quit stressing about it, and just collapse the deal.

I guess it comes down to what is more important to you $50 or $100 + your time to meet him versus selling the quad.

                            Re: Selling Woes

if your selling something for hundreds, then a hundred + or - is a big deal, but when you are selling something in the thousands, then $100 is nothing. You may lose more then the $50 when you go to sell it in the spring. From what i've learnt from used auto/stuff sales is that you should always take your first reasonable offer..... 9/10 times you won't get what you could have got from your first offer. (unless of course you can sit on it till you get what you want)

I agree your time and gas is probably worth more then $100, but locally in golden you may lose more then $100 on the next offer. Now if you were selling it in Calgary, Edmonton or Van, it would be a different story because the potential buyer population is a lot greater then golden.......

Jess - In the eyes of the law you are right, but without a written agreement and/or a deposit, you would be very hard pressed to get a judge to side with you and will probably throw it out before it gets to the courts, not to mention you'd be out the $500-1000 it would cost you to file a lawsuit. Only the price of the quad was agreed upon (to be picked up "where is, as is") shipping was not finalized so "deal" is not in stone. Without a deposit, Al is free to sell it to anyone that shows up with money in hand.

You live in a smaller town so your local market of buyers is way less than say Calgary. It is just a fact of small town live that you have to travel more. I would not have offered you anything for you....in fact he could just have well have asked you for fuel and some money for his time.
