  • Question about Audi drivers

So this hasn't really bothered me during the summer when I was driving the Jetta, its low to the ground, decent visibility etc. But this winter i've been driving on and off our family SUV and I've noticed that about 70% of newer audis I see on the road at night don't have their headlights on and are just running those LED strings.

I never realized how dangerous it was until I started driving a taller vehicle again. With the LED's low beam and lack of substantial output it makes these audi's incredibly difficult to see at night when they are behind/beside you. The first vehicle I drove was a bigger truck and I used to use our SUV quite a bit so its not that I'm not used to it or something as I've never had problems seeing people with their headlights on, its just these damn audi's.

From what i've read these are just supposed to function as daytime running lights NOT driving lights. So am I wrong and these are actually supposed to be driving lights? or are there a bunch of clueless audi owners in calgary that think it looks cool so they just run those?-> saw an R8 in kensington tonight cruising with just these on, so low I doubt anything higher than a subaru would be able to see him very well.

ive noticed that here too. mostly it is clules rich ***** business women that should be driving an SUV. i also HATE that fact that if they have a signal on it shuts that side off leaving 1 side on.
Yes... it is a Front Wheel Drive... your point?

This bothers me too. A lot of the chryslers do the same thing but the entire headlight goes out (only in DRL mode of course). I guess they figure it will be easier for others to see your turn signal if the DRL is turned off in the direction that you are indicating.

yea I hate that too, as with the audis as i've mentioned and chryslers vw337 mentioned people seem to drive at night with the DRLs on, so when that light shuts off and if its dark enough out with lots of headlights in your view I find you can lose perception of where the side of their vehicle is so if they are turning left and sticking into your lane to much it can result in an interesting situation.

I was just surprised to see that R8 tonight rolling like that, like I get the whole "coolness" factor of the LED strip but like ed hardy clothing, even though some people think its "cool" it doesn't make it any safer to be out in public like that.

driving at night with only the led strips is bad ass

i know though at full brightness they are blinding, you can adjust in vagcom what % they can shine at though.

i think it has more to do with their lack of beam angle than anything.

Every audi must come with them cranked down from factory I am assuming then, because I don't find them very intense at all

also for audi owners, with the headlights off like that do you get any gauge lights, don't know how people could possibly drive without gauges!!

I do get gauge lights all the time lights on or off. But if I don't turn on the headlights when it is dark there is an ambient light sensor and the car will alert me by gradually dimming my gauge lights to remind me. Or so says the manual anyway. I usually leave the headlights on auto.

In my van i have a dimmer for my dash lights, I have them cranked right down. I cant stand a bright dash. Often on the highway at night I turn off the dash lights. I Have cruise control, no need to keep checking my speed.

yea I agree i don't like a bright dash, just have to be able to see the gauges, speed is one thing but I always keep an eye on temp, and in the case of my truck oil pressure.

however cruise won't help you in the city! where most of us do our driving

never overheated but my old turbo volvo ran a little hot under load on long hills so I always kept an eye on it.

Just as a habit though its always good to check your gauges, so you don't end up being on of those guys that didn't notice until they were in the red and steam was pouring out of their hood. Also to check your speed (currently have no tickets!!). I check my gauges probably every 30-40 seconds (just a quick glance), so I never understood how people can forget to turn on their lights at night, it is so weird to pull up beside someone, look in and their dash is dark.
