  • New cell phone and plan

Is anyone on this forum currently using Wind Mobile? or is it still a fail? I thinking of switching to them as they just introduced a new $40 plan for unlimited everything

Also anyone recommend a phone? Right now I am currently leaning towards a Nexus S. Any thoughts?

Ive talked to a few people and they say the reception is much much better than before. They also added many new towers.

Isn't Wind a european company? I know I've got a friend who called this this afternoon asking about them as well.

Re: New cell phone and plan

I've been with Wind since their introduction. They definitely had some growing pains, but for the price (even better since I got in at the beginning), I couldn't refuse.

Now I have decent service all over the city (with the exception of the deep south - think 22x'ish)

Roaming is on the Rogers network, so it's not like I'm ever really without a phone in their "away" areas outside of the city.

Recommendation on the phone would be either the BB 9700 or the Motorola XT720 (depending if you want a blackberry or android); I'd avoid all the Huawei phones.

Wind operates through Globalive. Globalive operates through Orascom :P. Orascom is based out of Egypt and have networks on just about every continent.

              Chestermere should be covered now

Re: New cell phone and plan

There are some crazy Christmas deals on Telus and Bell right now. E.g. free smartphone + $100 gift card if you sign up for a contract.

You could run a Nexus S on Wind, you would have to get it from T-Mobile in the US and then unlock it. If you did that and changed your mind, you wouldn't be able to run the Nexus S on Rogers, Bell or Telus because the networks are incompatible.

If I were you I'd stay on a good network, $60-ish a month gets you a very nice plan with plenty of data and minutes. If you're contract free, you can get a great deal (free or almost-free) on something like an HTC Desire, Desire Z, or Dell Streak if you're keen on Android. They are very nice phones!

Re: New cell phone and plan

Ya the big 3 (and subs) are starting to offer pretty good packages. But I really do not want to be tied up in a 3 year contract. Especially with all the new companies launching. As soon as Shaw launches im gonna switch to them and plus they are going to be running on the aws signal too so it will be easy to switch.

Google is launching the nexus s at best buy on the 16th and they are already unlocked.

And ive thought of switching but then again there is that contract lol. The reason I thought of Wind is because they are offering unlimited nationwide calling, unlimited data and all calling features for $40 a month

Thought I would update this thread.....

I ended up signing up with Wind. $40 for unlimited everything included call features and they have even reduced it to $35 now. Yes there are some dead spots every once in a while, but I hardly ever hit them.

As for a phone I got a T-Mobile HTC G2, sold in Canada as a HTC Desire Z. The phone is amazing!!

I may switch to Wind with my iPhone. They have a sim card option. I'm currently getting hosed by Telus each month. As I rarely leave the "Wind" zone this should be a great option. I love the unlimited data plan!

Unfortunately the iphone wont work on the wind network because it does not use the aws 1700 frequency that wind does
