  • rant on death markings

I am getting a bit peaved with all the miniature memorials people put up at the location of there loved ones deaths . This is my city too . and i don't go to the cemetery and post pics of me living . I have had people die at various places around our province and when i drive buy a spot they died at i don't need to have a picture of them or a cross or some other reminder . That is why we have cemeteries . a private location for you to go and reflect on the passing of a close friend or loved one if you need a spot . It seems like just a pure look at me i am sad and need more attention personally all the fresh flowers and pictures . in red deer there is like 6 of these things now . some are like 10 years old . get over it. stop turning my city into your personal tombstone

I agree, I despise these eyesores. If someone keels over in Safeway we don't put a little white cross and flowers down the dairy aisle. Why do it on the roads?

About 3,000 people in Canada die each year on the roads and over 200,000 per year in total. Do you think I care or wish to be reminded that little johnny died here - no - please do your mourning in private.

the flowers and stuff people put up are going away next year.. city put a bylaw/cash grab in that they can't go up an instead they'll put a little band of aluminum on a pole with the persons name for a tribute.. at your expense! fucking city cash grab

i don't mind them but i think its more of a thought.. oh **** someone died here.. or either.. how the **** did someone die here?

I'm all for people having memorials of their friends, family members etc. I think that there should be a line to when it comes to posting them on public/city property. I've noticed a lot more of them in the last year or so, I think that they are getting excessive. I don't agree with the city putting in a bylaw that we have to pay for the memorial of others. If the families and friends want to put something up then they should have to pay for it. I can't believe that the city is trying to make money off of this. I think that memorials should be left for a cemetery or in the privacy of someone's home. I have respect for the dead but I think that the living families should have respect for the living(the public) too.

I duno, I don't think anyone has the right to say if this is right or wrong, everyone morns in different ways and I think that people need to be a little more accommodating for those who have been through a traumatic event.

If people think that these memorials need to cease because of some sort of attention seeking bs then on that same premise I argue facebook status updates should be illegal. I'd much rather see someone put flowers at a the site where someone died than come home to 50+ obnoxious status updates about how you bought a sick car, going on a vaca, had a tough workout, got a new job and other bs on my news feed.

but! I choose to ignore it and let people live their lives the way they want to, and if updating their FB status 3 times a day makes them happy then fine because in the end it has no gravity on my life, neither should someone putting up flowers have an effect on yours.... Just my opinion though.

Facebook is a choice you choose to go on, the use of city property is not. There is a place for grieving and distracting memorials on the side of the road is not it. I believe it is ok for items to be placed at a site where someone has recently passed away but there should be a time limit on it. After my brother in law passed away this year people placed items at the site where he died. I don't expect them to be there forever nor do I think my sister needs the reminder every time she drives by (it is not like she is going to forget anyways).

                      Re: rant on death markings

I was more getting at the attention seeking end of things (which I think is BS) and how you let things around you affect you. I drive by a memorial every day and I've think i've possibly looked at it once and only because the light was red and had nothing to do. It doesn't effect me in any way, it definitely doesn't distract me, a bunch of flowers and a teddy bear isn't enough to distract me from driving in the least so I think that argument is not well founded. Of course unless you have someone putting up a giant flashing sign, which i've never seen happen. I can also choose which roads I drive down, there are about 3 different ways to get around it that are all of equal distance but I choose to take that one road just like I choose to go on FB instead of myspace etc.

jhop, you say a lot of things. Most of which are somewhat reasonable. Comparing memorials, to facebook status' has got to be the most retarded thing I have ever heard.

                          You can also ignore status'.

It doesn't really bother me, most of the time, I am confused how said person died there. IE straight section of road, inside of a corner, etc. I don't really give a **** about it, what I do care about is, us having to pay for it.

Government is getting too large, too much control, too many dollars, too many socially funded programs. If you want it, you should have to pay for it.

perfect! I am glad you think so, I was comparing the "attention seeking" aspect which people seem to think these memorials are going for. And the comparison between this and FB was meant to show how ignorant that view is. Attention seeking is updating your FB status 5x a day NOT putting out flowers near the death place of a loved one. It was meant to sound "retarded" because thats what comparing honoring a loved one to attention seeking is IMO. That is why I said "on that same premise" ie on that same wavelength of thinking which I personally think it is out to lunch

J-hop I totally agree with everything you are saying. One of my best friends just passed away in a motorcycle accident 3 weeks ago and a ton of people put out flowers, and someone put up a tee shirt for people to sign that got over 100 signatures on it, people who didn't even know the kid were leaving flowers and notes. I have never come across any a$$holes who actually care about the memorials on the road, but then I look at some of the things I see on this forum and I'm not at all surprised in anyway that I would find those a$$holes here.
