Good place to get a rock chip fixed?

On the weekend driving down Deerfoot I encourted a rock hitting the front of my winsheild. I was wondering if there is anyone on the board that could recommend a place to get it fixed? If it's possible maybe an approx price too.

if you go to speedy, it will cost you $60. with that said they have the best system on the market. and they warranty the chip. if it cracks, the $60 you paid for the chip will come off the price of a new windshield

I think speedy has a deal where if you keep your receipt, any more chips you get are done at a discounted rate, maybe im thinking crystal glass though....

its a system developed by belron technical to introduce the resin only when all the air has been removed from the chip. maybe i should not state its the best, but its damn good and i have filled chips with it that a bridge kit never could. its called glass medic, google it and check it out. nice unit but imo its not worth the $3200 price tag. lol

All I can say is I had my chip fixed last year out in signal hill area by one of the repair guys in the parking lot, and as soon as the cold weather hit my windshield cracked.The repair never did look perfect, I always saw it in the windshield as I drove.

I don't know if any chip repair is better than the next, but I do regret getting it fixed, I would have been better off putting the money towards a new windshield.

Every chip is different, some worse than others. I have been in the industry for a long time, you would be amazed at what i have seen, yes from even speedy ... All i can say is if you get a chip, an you come to see me you wont be disappointed...

Just ask many of the members who have come to see me.

I'll chirp in here, thumbs up to Freddy, when I first got the GLI the windsheild had chips and a bunch of cracks, not only did he fill the chips, he filled the cracks too, If someone didnt point them out, you wouldnt have seen them.

don't go to speedy or a place that sells windshields. they'll charge too much AND do a horrible job. their motivation is to sell you a windshield, not repair it.

i went to one of those guys in the orange tent. he was nice and you can't even tell where the chips were. his price was very reasonable and he gave me a good deal. you _can_ negotiate a bit with them but not much cause of how they get paid.

use orange tent dudes.

Out of curiosity do repaired windshields often break with the extreme hot/cold cycles we get in the winter?

This was really the first time I ever used a windshield chip repair service, in the past I just let the chips build up and when the windshield eventually cracked I would get a new one. I'm not the expert on this stuff, but do chip repair services prolong windshield life, or are they mainly for aesthetics?

the whole point of a chip repair is to restore the windshield to 100% strength. hot and cold should not crack a properly repaired windshield. With that said, your windshield was already damaged before your chip was repaired. as far as not going to a place that sells windshields, that i can not agree with. i own my own company and i offer chip repair. I do my chips to 100% of my ability to get a sale. if i repair the chip and the windshield cracks from another chip sometime later, that customer would likely return to me if he/she was satisfied with the transaction. Many people care more about the aesthetics of the repair and not the integrity of the windshield. as stated before, every chip is different and many factors come in to play with the repair.

And hey speed cat, would love to shoot the s@#t with ya sometime at a meet. always good to meet another glass guy.

I went to Speedy Glass with my Porsche, they made 3 chips absolutely disappear, I mean I can't see them even if I'm looking for em.

Probably saved me buying a new windshield as one was starting to crack. This was like 2 seasons ago so IMO even if it does eventually crack, I totally got my money's worth!!

This is exactly what I was led to believe, however the windshield clearly cracked from the point of the chip. It was not repaired at a place that changes auto glass, it was changed by one of the "orange tent" guys.

Just to clarify, how was my windshield already damaged before the chip was repaired? It was an otherwise perfect windshield that had one rock chip in it, I had it repaired, and the repair was never perfect, a few months later with the heat and cold it started cracking from the point where the chip was repaired. There were, and still are no other chips in the windshield.

The experience just led me to believe that the crack repair wasn't as good as claimed to be, but in all honesty it could have been the system they use, the technician or the weather that day, since it is done outside. I don't really know, that's why I ask the people that do know. Is it fair to say that there is no way to know whether the chip repair will hold up or not from a simple visual inspection?

Aesthetically I was happy to not have to see a chip in the windshield everyday, and for the small fee I would do it again. It's the structural part I wondered about.

a chip in the glass is essentially a fault or crack. The surface of the glass has tension and with a chip in it it is weakened. It creates a hot spot in the surface tension which over time ( short or long) will break. without filling the crack completly, the surface hotspot is still there. thus causing the crack. its amazing to think that a windshield can make up to 30% of a vehicles structural integrity. they constantly take alot of stress.
