this isn't snow tire weather. this is don't drive like a douch weather and you'll be fine.

you won't need your snow tires until the road actually has snow on the road. not water and 1 cm of slush

last year i didn't put on my winters until end of december. oh ps, i should add that i rarely drive on highways in the winter. usually just macleod trail. but my hill can be a biznatch

yay snow today.. meh just wet.. hopefully it doesnt' cool off too much still rolling in the S with summers ahoy!

I have all seasons now so its a bit better, but had summers on the Jetta. I found it wasn't worth pushing it. Slam on the breaks with summers when it's around freezing and you defiantly don't have the same traction... Wet or dry.

I have been rocking winters for over a week now... I prefer not to be surprised and caught off guard when it hits. I don't want to be one of the unprepared people causing the 4 hour commute on the first snow day because I wanted to save 1/8th of 1/32'nd of rubber by waiting 3 to 6 extra weeks to install them...

People seem to think your rubber melts if there isn't any snow, but it just aint so. Hell, my wife runs her winters year round cuz she only does maybe 8k of driving a year, and I take them off every 3 years and sell them used with half tread on them... Just depends on how much of douche you drive like as to how they wear!

I should note that not everyone waits because they are worried about wear, and that for many it is that they just hate the cosmetics and fun factor of winter tires and want to hold onto summer as long as they can... lol! That excuse actually holds more water with me than the fear of treadwear!

yea I don't think anyone claims the rubber "melts" but on my really good snow and ice tires you can even feel with your fingernail the huge difference in hardness of the rubber used on proper snow tires when compared to a summer or even an all season tire. My brothers car used to be the family vehicle and my dad was religious about changing off the winters and we would get about 4 seasons out of a set of tires and still have lots of tread to spare when they were replaced. My brother bought the car from them and didn't give a damn about switching the tires out and killed them in two years (note the car was being used about 1/3 of the time because less people were using it).

I dunno just never made sense to me to run winters year round, I only made that mistake once and noticed a huge amount of tread wear after the summer (of course I drive WAY more than 8k a year haha). You also have to consider the fact that in summer you have more traction and generally take corners quicker than on ice and also accell/decel quicker because you're no longer driving on a slick surface.

To me buying a set of dedicated summers and a set of dedicated winters just makes sense.

I've had winters on my mk3 for 3 years... but its probably only driven 15000km in that time.

Mine will go on next week or so, since the avg temp is below 7C and I'm driving the sub with all seasons anyway.

Whether there is snow on the ground or not has nothing to do with it.

And aliencurv, if you got in a crash with me, I'd be checking your tires and pushing for a careless driving charge if you still had summers. It's the STOPPING distance that's the issue, not whether you can light up at a stop sign.

Speaking of which, did that civic fine (I think it was 100 bucks) for people that cause delays with bad tires ever pass? They were talking about it in council last year.

that is a great point, I haven't been hit ever but if I am ever hit I'd do the same if they were running inappropriate or worn out tires. People always claim driver stupidity, which I agree with to a certain degree but not equipping your vehicle properly is just as bad if not worse.

Winters on the Sienna already and summers still on the passat. We always put winters on one of the cars early so that if we wake up to a blizzard we can at least take something out.

That is a good point. Ive been watching the temp too and its starting to dipp... I might put mine on a bit earlier....
