  • Do 40 km/h over speed limit in BC, car gets impounded.

Drivers caught speeding excessively in British Columbia will soon risk having their cars impounded for the offence.

Starting Sept. 20, drivers caught going more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit will have their vehicle impounded for seven days, the provincial government announced Thursday.

"Excessive speed is often a death sentence," said B.C. Solicitor General Mike de Jong. "We want to save lives by going after the kind of driver who drives significantly and dangerously over the posted speed limit, and then get them off the road."

A driver caught committing the same speeding offence a second time will lose the vehicle for 30 days.

The penalty will be 60 days for drivers who are caught for a third time or more within a two-year period.
    Additional penalties

Impoundment will be in addition to existing penalties, which include:

    * A fine of $368 to $483, depending on how excessive the speed.
    * Three penalty points on the driver's licence.
    * An ICBC driver-risk premium of $320 a year for three years, over and above regular insurance premiums.

Street racers will also affected by the rule change. Under the new provisions, both drivers deemed to be involved in street racing will face minimum seven-day impoundments.

Street racing previously had a minimum impoundment period of 48 hours.

Additionally, the Motor Vehicle Act now makes careless acts such as excessive tailgating, and reckless driving actions such as wheelies and doughnuts subject to a seven-day impoundment, de Jong said.

i hate this because the law as it reads is so bloody vague.
i got caught a few years ago under the old law, it was a big ticket but no impoundment. the stupid thing is, their definition of racing can mean any two cars speeding, regardless of whether you are actually racing or not.

i think that is sweet, 7 days isn't much of an impound period though

why is this possibly sweet? in a province with some of the lowest speed limits in North America? its stupid.

much of the #1 hwy in BC is 80 or 90. Alberta is 110. Same road, same conditions. I would argue BC's roads are better maintained and therefore safer as you're not dodging potholes and dips in the road

BC has this little tiny tiny tiny rule.

              You gotta pay to play.

I would be willing to wager that anyone on this forum traveling the #1 has got up to 130 in a 90km/hr passing lane trying to pass 2 semis, 3 5th wheel campers and a dodge Caravan in the left lane doing 93 attempting to pass another dodge caravan doing 89.

you've clearly never driven any of the highways in BC.

i'll agree whole heartdly that 40 over in urban areas is excessive and should get that kind of treatment. but when your main highway has a speed limit that is well under the national average simply because you as a government are too lazy to redo speed limits, theres a problem.

this is also a RIDICULOUS attempt to try and cure a problem that doesn't exist. you show me the statistics that show SPEED as the #1 cause of an accident. Many times speed is a factor, but things like; driver distraction, intersections, and other variables are usually the primary concern when relating to accidents. The government LOVES to use SPEED and say its a factor. of course speed is a factor...you're in a moving vehicle. But excessive speed? i've yet to see the documentation that shows its the main problem. in fact, i've seen nothing but the opposite when it comes to traffic safety stats.
You want to clean up the roads, implement a driver licensing program that actually forces people to know how to drive before they are given their license. BC has got to be one of the worst provinces in Canada when it comes to handing out licenses to those that should not qualify. Tighten up the licensing, and you might have better drivers on the road to begin with.

                        Congrats BC. Another tax grab.

90km is very very slow for a highway.......

Re: Do 40 km/h over speed limit in BC, car gets impounded.

Ontario had something similiar that was implemented a couple of years ago. It was considered street racing if you were doing 50km/h faster then the posted speed limit whether you were racing another vehicle or just by yourself on a deserted road at 4am.

The fine if I remember correctly was a maxium of $10,000.00 and they crush your car. Hence why I got the **** out of there. I'll take BC's rule any day of the week compared to Ontario's. I almost got busted by an off duty officer who I blew by at well over the limit on a highway back home. He followed me while he was on the phone with dispatch but lost me when i exited the highway. 5 cruisers pulled me over, but was driving normal once I had exited the highway. They tried to get me to admit that I was driving carelessly. Sorry too smart to fall for that. Just got a warning and they couldn't do anything else. I was very lucky that day.

And just to let it be known, the highway I was on was pretty empty except for a few cars here and there. No one was in risk of getting hurt because I wasn't driving that fast while texting or talking on the phone or weaving in and out of traffic. Two hands on the wheel and extremely focused. Sometimes now and then you need to let loose from time to time when that time is appropiate. Otherwise lifes not worth living if you can't live.
