  • Electrical work needed

My new (to me) detatched garage needs more juice. Currently there is a line run incorrectly on what I think is a 15amp circuit. I only have 3 electrical plugs and 2 bulbs. I want to have at least 6, probably 8 plugs with enough amperage to hook up an air compressor. I think I want to be able to put in 4 bulbs and probably a couple flourescent strips as well. The kicker is that I have to run a trench from the house to the garage.

Luckily it's all lawn from the house to the garage, but I don't know what's involved in running from the circuit box in the house (or meter) to the garage and if I need another small breaker box in the garage. If anyone wants to chat about it and let me know what's involved (permits, etc) that would be great.

    Re: Electrical work needed

I went thru this 3 years ago.
Dig a trench min depth back then was 18 inches deep.
Pony box in the garage with at least 50 amp service.
Busting out concrete from your existing fuse panel and run the wire.
Or you call enmax and spend $$$$$ FOR another electrical meter and hook up.
If you want you can swing by and take a look at my set up.
Oh and you need a master electrician to sign off on the electrical if hooking up an additional breaker box.

      Re: Electrical work needed

I have wired up a couple garages before. The city of calgary website has lots of info as to what you need for the trench depth etc. Like Paul said but a pony panel in the garage, that way if you blow a breaker you don't have to run into the house. Yes you need an electrical permit but that is about it. They come out twice, once for rough in (no outlets etc no finished walls), then one final. I would put all your outlets half way up the wall, it is way better for garages. I would talk to Stefan about his setup as it turned out really nice.

        Re: Electrical work needed

Feel free to pm me/ come look. Danno did my garage. 220v/60amp. 1 plug along each side wall an 2 plugs on front wall just above the work bench and one plug outside. Also 1 240v connection for heater. For lighting I have 3 standard 100w bulbs on roof that I was thinking I'd switch to flourecent eventually. There are two bulbs in the door opener too, so the light is pretty decent as it is now. Also have 3 exterior lights.
