So my 2001 tdi now has 235000km on it and the body is showing a lot of chips and rust. A real paint job would be 4000ish. Spot repair is probably out of the question as there are a lot of spots. Given the resale of this car, 4000$ is a lot of cash, but I will probably drive it a few years yet and don't want it to become a total rust bucket. Is Maaco even an option? I know they are not a high end shop, but it may be appropriate given the car. Thoughts?

Re: Maaco paint?
A complete paint job is well north of $4000
Do you know anything about autobody? If so, maybe you can prep your car yourself in your free time?
I've seen people do one panel at a time and drive around in primer until they can complete the entire car. This isn't ideal, but it's an option if you want to save some cash.Tint sucks

I've done some body work, but it is not at all one of my strong points... was a bit of a fail.Last edited by stefan; 06-10-2010, 07:51 PM.Stefan

Re: Maaco paint?
Get someone inclined with body work to help you, then get it painted somewhere, I haven't heard anything good about them, yet again I haven't heard anything bad.

I'm not looking to get a show car out of this, but I think I can get a lot more miles out of the car mechanically, and would like get a few more out of the tin too.
I would like to work on it myself, but I need to wait until my little ones get a little older before I take on another big project like this. I'm still working on the finishing bits of my garage, and landscaping, and its taking forever!Stefan

Re: Maaco paint?
Seriously putting 4 or 5 grand into paint/body is a bad investment. You sell the car and put the 5 grand in on your next car, get the same car with a better body if you want. Swap over any mods you have that are super important to you.Last edited by Kor; 06-11-2010, 10:04 AM.KR

Re: Maaco paint?
Of course a new car sounds more ideal. If new car was an option, I'd have one. Two even. I'm not attached to the car I have, but unless its a straight up trade, a different car is not going to happen.
You're working on a different budget than I. If I cant find a decent way to clean up this car for a good price, then I'll drive it how it is. Rust and chips aren't the end of the world, just a pain in the ass.Stefan

Re: Maaco paint?
I'm totally in the same boat as you are. Now I'm thinking of putting the car in storage now and getting a daily beater. I want to keep the car but there is rust building, I mean it is a 7 year old car after all. But I do love the mk4 so I'm willing to do some more work on it/invest in it. I'm thinking save the money and do it right the first time and screw the headaches in the future.drive green ||

Re: Maaco paint?
If you just need a car to get to work and back there are some pretty good deals on new micro/compact cars now. 0% financing for 60-72 months is'nt hard to come by on a lot of nissan/honda/mazda/toyota cars.
IF you're bent on keeping the jetta though I would say just leave as is. That maco paint job wont last long.2012 gti, 2012 mustang.
