  • Telus TV - Media Room...who's upgraded?

Ah Telus...we love you, we hate you...but mostly we hate you. So after two years of absolute horrible gong show performance with Telus TV, my wife was offered the opportunity to "upgrade" to the Media Room platform, which will apparently provide us with the best broadcast media platform in the western Canada market...it will also feed the fish, walk the dog, vacuum every 2nd day etc. It rides under our current contract, no fee increase, and we maintain our current cancellation without penalty agreement, so no risk involved (other than blood pressure).
Has anyone gone to the PVR based Telus platform yet? I'm curious as to whether it lives up to Telus's own billing. The tech is scheduled to show up shortly (our TV wanted an "authentication code" this morning, no technician had been booked until I called to ask WTF...).
I'll provide a review later this week if by some miracle it is actually installed today without a glitch...

I have had telus tv for 4 years now, and never had an issue. I have the new PVR now and so far so good. No complaints and seems pretty easy to use. Will record 3 channels at a time (only 2 in HD). And you can access it from all the other boxes in the house to watch recordings. I dunno.. I'd say I'm happy.

Ditto! I've had it for around 2 months now and am happy with it. Love the PVR!

Telus TV sucks sh*t. I don't know how anyone could deal with that garbage. Audio delays when you change channels and whatnot. Piece of piss.

My buddy got Free telus TV for a year when he moved into a new highrise downtown. After like 4 months he said f*ck it and got shaw haha

My co-worker was complaining that if you set it to record your shows you let it pick the channels it sometimes records on ones you don't have. (You get nothing but a blank screen and no show on the PVR)

Re: Telus TV - Media Room...who's upgraded?

When I bought my house, shaw's cost for hardware and connection was ridiculous, as was their customer service. I thought they would be the way to go as the house was already set up for shaw, but was very disappointed.

Customer service aside though, I've had no issues/crashes/audio delays with the new PVR so far. I have not tried to set up a recording where the box picks the channel, so not sure about that glitch.

The biggest downfall with this new PVR's software as opposed to the old non-pvr digital box from telus is that you have to set up your channel 'favorites' for the channels you subscribe to. The old box just knew what you had and didn't show channels you didnt have in the guide. If you changed your channel package, they showed up, or if a free preview channel came on, it added it. It took all of 5 mins to set up on the new box, but it was an annoyance. Smooth running otherwise. Their tech guy said it's much nicer than their first PVR as far as ability/quality/stability.

Re: Telus TV - Media Room...who's upgraded?

So far so good...PVR worked okay, the PiP browsing is nice. It took a long time to "customize" the guide so that it was only showing subscribed channels, the older platform had multiple guide selections built in.
Throughput speeds on the ADSL seem to have improved as well, I haven't done any benchmarking yet though. I did not notice too much lag with an HD stream open and another one on PVR.
We'll see what happens during hockey tonite, if we have learned anything in the past it has been to rely on a service disruption during a playoff game...

I have Bell but my sister in law just got the latest Telus TV and I want it.

Having the recording central on a media server in the basement that any telus cisco box can watch is much better than what I have with Bell, and I think they can do 2 shows and watch a 3rd (bell is only record 2 or watch 1 record 1)

Do most hoods have the required fibre backbone to support it? That was the problem with the first releases - the old copper twisted pair.

I've been waiting to upgrade my Telus TV to the new one, but I've been told that it blitzes everything save d on your PVR (ummmm.... hello, WTF is that USB port for if I can back it up?) and I've got enough TV saved to get me through the summer, so maybe I'll upgrade before the fall TV shows start.

I have the Bell dual tuner HD PVR with a coax output for the second zone.

I can watch two shows at once (PIP) or record two while watching a 3rd recorded show. The system also uses a coax output for the second zone. I can watch a show in the bedroom and a different one in the living room, or the same show in both rooms at the same time. One remote is IR and the one in the bedroom is RF so it works anywhere in the house.

One HD, two remotes, two TV's. Works awesome.

(I do have three coax in the living room though. Two in and one out)

Might have to read about the new Telus one though. It's record 3 at once :P
