I've got a pretty dece back pack called Lowepro.
Got it from The Camera Store.
Hiked with it & it is absolutely comfortable.
I can't remember from the tag if it is water proof but the material does propose that it is all weather proof.

I've got an EOS 50D with the 18-200mm attached & it fits the back pack with another 5-6 inches of extra room for a longer lens.
I still got room for 3 other smaller lenses & 2 flashes (could be interchangeable).
I got room for a couple of reference books, extra memory cards, battery charger, usb cable, etc.
It also has an external way to carry a tripod.

      I quite like it.

Plus, the main pocket that holds all the most important goods are only accessible when you take the back pack off.
          Tis very safe.

I have a Lowpro Slingshot 100aw you can buy for $50. $110 retail. Used it a few months, and bought a bigger bag.

I prefer Kata Bags personally, their straps and bags are all very comfortable and have a high level of accessibility.

If you wanted a fair amount of storage you'd be looking at something like a 3N1-10 (they also have larger sizes as well).

well i was hoping for something to fit inside my current backpack as carry on then i'd lug the camera bag by itself during the day.. but maybe i can just get an entire backpack but then if i go on road trips i don't want a backpack for that..

                      Re: camera bag suggestions?

I'f you're not planning on doing anything rough with it, why not just toss your camera in your regular backpack? I often throw mine in my hydropack when I'm biking. I even took a nasty spill at Whistler and other than a broken filter on the front of the lens it came out pretty well.

What I'm trying to say is that if you're pretty sure you don't need all the padding and protection of a camera bag, you can get away without one. If you get a camera bag that's small enough to go in your backpack, you'll need a bigger backpack, or a camera bag that is only just big enough to hold the camera and the one lens. As I recall you didn't really want to swap lenses anyway right? You can throw your charger, memory card and what not into the backpack without worry. If you want to make sure it doesn't scratch anything, just throw the charger and memory cards in a sock before putting in the backpack.

well in asia i was able to squish it all into a camcorder bag that was able to nicely fit in my normal backpack but i can't do that with the big lens on it

alex that lowepro you have how much storage does it have other than the camera? like the top pouch part?

if i can stuff a lonely planet/map/iphone in there that would be swell
then main part looks enough for the body+big lens and additional lense and other random crap ?
