Well basically they won't know unless something goes wrong. For example if you get pulled over in a rental you are required to provide the rental agreement, if the rental agreement does not permit you to drive out of province from what i've been told you may be detained and the vehicle towed at your expense because you are illegally driving the vehicle.

Also, if you say got in an accident out of province, then of course you have broken the contract, so if you paid for rental insurance through the rental company they will not cover you and if you are using your own personal insurance chances are they will not cover you because you voided the contract.

As for going into the states, you may be asked to provide documentation for the rental at the border and you won't get through with a contract only valid in canada.

On a related note, in the near future rentals will be equipped with GPS (for recovery purposes mainly) so they can track you if you go out of province.

Thanks for the tips on where to fill up. I haven't driven out since they did the sky high overpass near Golden, it should be fun.
Good plan, long drive by yourself but with some nice tunes it could be okay. Our trip was super smooth until we hit the major accident at radium that had to be on that day at that particular time. Otherwise it was actually a pretty good drive. Wish my girlfriend felt comfortable driving highways like that, my leg was ready to fall off after the trip.

i drove out to van friday and got home last night. roads were bare. construction in between sunshine and lake louise (various sections) for highway twinning. limits of 50kms and 70kms through there. bow valley parkway might be faster to bypass, but i've never driven it. lots of cops. also construction near golden, as usual. also slow. also construction along highway 1 at various sections starting from chilliwack to vancouver.

no toll on the #5 was nice.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3
