don't really think it has to do with design.... a turbine is a turbine, the design concept has basically remained the same throughout the years, it doesn't have to do with the design of the turbine but rather the nature of the debris entering the turbine, the only way to stop this would be to put some sort of giant filter on the end of the turbine which could never work......

here is a quick vid talking about what happens....

I think what they are worried about is lawsuits, think about it, if a plane were to have any sort of trouble think of how many lawsuits they would have on their hands. With the "sue everybody to get ahead" mentality of today's culture the airlines are making the intelligent move of not giving people a chance to capitalize.

Well the new stuff is less affected by inhaling debris. But I guess that is more of a debris thing and blade design, than fine particles. I am sure you have seen the videos of the A380 Rolls Royce turbines sucking **** in, so cool.

Although today on CNN they were talking about how the current dust is much heavier, therefore not causing the same dramatic problems as the fine initial dust.

But the Germans have been flying everyday since the eruption without issue.

Well might just have to come to a point where testing is needed and perhaps you will need to sign a waiver to fly. If it is that important for you to get somewhere then you give up your right to compensation in case something happens.

I am sure there is not a huge amount of risk but can you imagine the back lash if they kept flying and something happened and really unless getting somewhere is needed to save your life waiting around a few extra days is not the end of the world.

people always forget that though. they want it and they want it now regardless of the consequences to either themselves or others.

its not like they are stuck in antarctica and are running out of food. I mean really....
I could think of worse places in the world to be stuck

Don`t forget aircraft technology moves a hundred times slower then all other technology. There is also the problem that ash goes molten at right about the point that engines operate. Also the ash clouds are there densest right at the height planes fly.
I have a coworker that has been stuck in Barcelona since the ash hit. That ******* is getting a paid vacation and I am stuck doing all his work.. what a pain in the ash!
