  • Buying in US

Since our Dollar has come up again, its pretty close to making cross border shopping worth it again right?

So I guess since I know some of you have bought US cars and brought them back - I know about the RIV and taxes etc etc but where have you found the best shopping resource to be?

    Ebay? craigslist? manufacturers websites?

And financing it - Whats the best way? Do it at home and then buy in the US or do it via their dealer (Can I do that as a Canadian?)

      Re: Buying in US

So thanks for the tips *******. Sadly thats not what I'm looking for. So, kindly GoFuckYourself.

That tells me HOW to import, which I'm already aware of. I'm looking for resources to find "THE" car and how people that have imported have done it(finding the car, not getting it across the border).

I've been all over autotrader, ebay, vwvortex and VW.com/ca and not been having much success - perhaps I'm being too picky and getting frustrated with inefficient search engines but I know what I want and won't settle for less.

I also remember (I think it was Kor or Ginch, but I might be wrong) who figured out last summer when the dollar was high that when we reach $X.xx it became cheaper to buy in the US because cars are just cheaper even after you pay for the RIV and taxes etc (so yea, this bit is on the top link, but that works for NEW cars and I'm looking USED)

Maybe the answer is hours of scouring the internet looking for a light to no mod blue mkV GTI with low KM/Miles. Maybe I just wait, maybe I don't find it. Either way, you're useless post didn't help anything.

I found mine on Vortex. I did however scour all the usual suspects as well though (cars.com. autotrader, ebay etc). As far as payment, its best have your money in order here in canada. You as a canadian will not be able to use the dealer financing cross border.

              Re: Buying in US

The importation game is wicked easy... so long as you have the USD cash in hand. Got mine through eBay... but was on www.autotrader.com , www.cars.com , autos.yahoo.com and www.vwvortex.com pretty much daily for over a month.

Word of advice: Be "patient" and wait for the exact car you are looking for.

PS. I'm still waiting for an Ibis White RS4 in good condition with low mileage... let me know if you find it!

                Cars.com is the best IMO.

Also if the company you are buying from has a web-based national inventory then search that.

I recommend finding a dealership that is keen to work with you. The salespeople I worked with sent me digital photos of the car (like 30 photos) before I bought it, and I barely had to ask. They were super nice to me on the phone and even took care of some of the import paperwork for me.

Finance it through your Canadian bank for least trouble buying.

With the dollar being so strong you can't help but start to think about doing this again. I know a few of you have driven your car back up and some have shipped. How easy is shipping it up? Are there any major hold ups once it gets to Calgary? I know Sea Rail is one of the major transporters has anyone used them?

You can finance here at home and just take cash, draft or wire the money. you will not be able to finance down there unless you have some sort of us SIN for there credit system...(Basicly make income in the US)
talk to your bank and they can go over it with you. I just financed someone that bought down there.

                        Make it happen!

Transport the car "In Bond" with Hansen's. It's a no-brainer. They'll walk you through the process.

Nope. Pay the GST, A/C tax and RIV fee here in Calgary and the car is yours.
