Try 1 1/4 EMT (electrical metal tubing) You will find it in the Electrical Department at home depot. Not to sure on the price, I know a 3/4 piece is $8.50 for a 10' length. It can also be bent with the appropriate bender. I have access to one if you need it.

      i dont need anything bent.
im just wondering how rigid that going to be with a camera and heavy lens on the end of it.

anyone make/know where to get carbon fibre rods?
i could go significantly smaller OD and have more strength and rigidity with less bounce

Stiffness? Out of a generic carbon tube? Possibly one of the more funny things I have heard. Alu would be the best bet. Very stiff, although that can make it a bit bouncy.
