  • Where to buy 1 1/4" aluminum piping

I'm trying to find aluminum piping. No luck at RONA or home depot.

Looking for approximately 12-15' in 4-5' lengths.

If anyone has any ideas, or works with the stuff and has scraps let me know. It can even be 1 1/4" as well.

    Thanks

Metal Supermarket should have it, or definately would be able to get it for you... but they aren't cheap (at least when compared to wholesale places like Terra-nova and Copper & Brass).

Metal Supermarket or Assorted Metals. Might be able to get it from Ryerson metals, 12' might be a full length in that size.

Haven't tried em myself, but Team Tube might have it too.

Will Ryerson or Team Tube sell to an individual (none company) though??

If you go to a wholesaler, chances are you'll have to buy a full length of pipe, which is probably 20', but I'm not 100% sure about that as I don't tend to deal with aluminum very much...

the quality doesn't really matter to me. its for a camera car rig for photography.

the 4-5' lengths make it easy to transport round and set up.

          i'll check out metal supermarket

Get muffler piping cheap and easy to weld or bend.

muffler piping is too heavy. i want aluminum as its light, dont need to weld it, and makes it uber portable

Princess Auto carries aluminum pipes/tubes as well as flat and angle peices.

I think the one in the NE has a better selection.

Home depot should have Alu Conduit, I bought some there last time for my rig. Although 1" 1/4 may be the issue. Why that size? Going concentric?

                    what size did you use?

i just need something to superclamp onto. 1.25"-1.5" would be perfect. 2" is overkill and starts getting heavy for no reason. 1" is a little too thin and you get a lot of bounce.

home depot may very well have it, but not anywhere that i looked for it. I was looking at marlborough mall and the people up there dont seem to have their gr5 education.

I will have to check what two sizes I used. I have two pieces about 6-7ft long-ish (guessing from memory) One bigger and one smaller, they are concentric, almost. About an 1/8th" gap. I then just cut a slit at the top and welded a nut on both sides of the slit, and I stripped the threads out of one nut. Ran a bolt through am just use it to thread into the threaded nut and boom clamp.

I think mine are around 1.5 and 1.25 now that I think about it. Will have to check, as I am currently in Edmonton and it is in Calgary. Friend of mine while under the influence wanted to know how much clamping force it could withstand, so he tightened it until the nuts broke off. So, I gotta re-do that.

im just going to use some pipe couplers, they are cheap and easy and hold everything how it should be. That way i dont have to worry about drunk idiots

Yeah, I just liked the idea of being able to adjust the length. I am not too worried about it, I think I will just JB weld it this time. They were some pretty sketch welds, as I used a welder not meant for aluminum, kinda glad he broke them, instead of them breaking in the field and my camera hitting the deck. I think it has to be DC and I used an AC welder, or vice versa.

Check the Electrical department for it at Home Depot. How are you going to thread the ends of the pipe?

I am going to revisit building one of these rigs. I need more magic clamps, a friend of mine wants to get rid of his few magic clamps and arm, so I am going to pick those up once I get working again and am not a broke student.

I also suck at the PS part of getting rid of the rig, so my angles are a bit more limited. Although PS CS5 seems to help greatly with that.

But anything will be an upgrade from my first rig haha, was a bit scary hanging the D200 off it.

Very excited to see your rig. Photographic creativity excites the inner engineer.

yeah i wont be hanging a $2000 lens and $1500 camera on duct tape.....

im planning on using compression couplers for coupling. they are cheap and easy to use.

yeah, was a bit sketchy hanging it off, especially considering the lens at that moment wasn't mine. But it was unreal, how tough that was to get off the car. I nearly broke that tripod, trying to get it off. It had way more strength than the current 35lbs suction cups. You also don't want duck tape chilling on your modern day paint.
