I brought two new iPads back from Las Vegas yesterday. One for my gf's geeky brother-in-law and one for my office. Considering we're a Works-With-iPhone hardware developer, it seemed to make sense. I'll report back once I've had a chance to play with it a bit.
Curious though, I wonder why they haven't used the ipod touch/phone for that? its cheaper, smaller and as far as I can tell the Ipad has no functions that the ipod touch/phone doesn't have, if that lighting system has some sort of base station that can hook up to the internet then when you are away on vacation you could use your iphone to turn the lights on in your house for security reasons.
The main reason for shying away from the iPod touch/iPhone is because of the smaller sized screen. The screen they're using now are 10" touch screens. I believe it's a resolution issue. From what I know thus far their system is basically attached to an internal network they create, something to that effect at least.
A couple other markets I see potentially using the iPad:
Doctors, instead of a separate clipboard for each patient, you could just have their data streamed to the device and the doctor could swipe between data sheets.
Photographers, rather than meeting with a prospective client in a coffee shop and pulling out a notebook and showing you portfolio to them with arrow keys or mouse clicks; you hand them the iPad and have them swipe through the photos at their own pace. If you narrate and weave your stories as they go through your photos you engage them far more.
Over 75 million people already have iPod touch's and iPhone's, add in how many other people have simply used each device and you've got millions of people who already know how to use it. So I see it creating a new market space, one currently occupied by under powered PC tablets running a full OS, and over powered portables running horribly basic and inefficient mobile OS's.
Time will tell my friends.

The wife's cousin is a photographer, and bought one from the states for exactly that reason. I'm going to Long Beach for the Indy grand prix on the 18th......I may pick one up if I leave my electronic will power at the hotel.
The Doctor idea is an old one. That was the idea with the initial Compaq Tablet. It just didn't catch on. Paper is too cheap and plentiful. It works with or without power, you don't need to charge paper. The clipboard hangs from the end of the bed, and is always there, and ready for whoever needs/wants to read it.
Although I agree the doctor idea makes sense it just isn't feasible. Especially in Canada where the taxpayers are footing the bill.
I want to know how long the battery actually lasts. That is a big screen to power, considering how shitty the battery life is on my Touch.
I find it a bit of a joke that they are releasing a new OS this week. It has been out for what? 5 days? It will not include flash support, Apple has made it clear they want the content providers to adapt their format. I can see it being sweet once jailbroken.
Friend of mine does home automation, and he uses the Touch and software for his installs and customers. So sick!
I like what Canadian Turbo said, just have it hanging around the house, that makes some sense, if it could multitask.
Just an FYI you can find 'video' content that is Mp4/Ipod friendly.
