  • Buying a car from BC?

Whats the deal with buying a car in BC, do you get 2 weeks for registration like you do here?

Im thinking of buying a car in BC and driving it back here, but im confused for what i need for a temporary registration? I can get temporary insurance no problem. Can I just get the temporary insurance, use my AB plate and a bill of sale to drive it back?

You can't register an oop car, and they want a bill of sale for a in transit. I dont have a bill of sale, cause I havent seen or bought the car yet.

    Any input?

if you want to make your OOP inspection go REALLY easy make sure you have a ICBC aircare slip from the last 6 months showing that it passed. that will ensure most engine related things should be okay, aside from headgasket and such. it shouldn't be burning oil or anything like that though as it would show up in emissions testing.

call your insurance provider and get the insurance set up. ICBC autoplan will issue the in-transit permits. Call ahead and get the low-down on what documents you need. THere is a BC bill of sale that will be required. No mickey mouse writing up a sales slip on a napkin stuff
you should be able to do a fax/phone deal with your insurance provider and get the slips sent abck and forth that way.

I bought a car from BC and drove it back, it was made a bit complicated by the uneducated ICBC staff but what I remember is......

        1. Go to an Autoplan and do the bill of sale and get a transit permit (this is what I did but not sure it's the right way so I take no responsibility). Plan to have some free time as there will be much confusion when you tell them what you are trying to do.
        2. Put them in the front and back windows.
        3. Start driving it home
        4. Get pulled over by the first RCMP that passes you because you have no rear plate
        5. Checks out the permit and tells you everything is good for BC but you will probably get pulled over in Alberta because of the transit permits (luckily I didn't but I drove VERY carefully).
        6. Set up your Alberta insurance and book an OOP inspection.
        7. Get the inspection and insure and register.

Hope/Pray that the OOP goes smoothly.

My OOP went pretty good but it has gotten a lot more difficult, I think mainly to try to make it more difficult to get Japanese and US cars more difficult to bring here. You may be familiar with how the OOP works so I won't go in to details.
