Jacks and Torque Wrenches?

What do you guys use? Where did you buy it and would you recommend it?

Currently looking to purchase the following Shur-Lift 1-1/2 ton Aluminum floor jack from Princess Auto but not sure if it is any good. Help?!

- check minimum clearances, maximum lift, capacities...
1.5 ton is ok for the car, if you get heavier vehicles later, look at other jacks too.

This jack might be a problem getting under the car, unless you lift from the factory jack points first.


for torque wrenches, try sears, canadian tire they usually go on for 1/2 price every so often.
My princess auto torque wrenches didn't last long. Currently have canadian tire ones, and they've been good for ever.

Of course if you have extra cash maybe go for snapon or whoever makes good ones.

Haven't seen the digital torque wrenches in large consumer stores yet, but that's what I would like next.

I have that jack and have had no problems with it. I also have a couple cheap PA torque wrenches and they get the job close but I don't trust the settings 100% of course.

i have a Husky 1/2" Torque wrench from Home Depot. had it for a few years now. does anyone know where one would get it calibrated?

POWER FIST is the Princess Auto Torque Wrench and mine has always been reliable.

I got an all aluminum hydraulic low-profile jack from Crappy Tire a few years ago - It was like $60 and it's only 2 inches tall and lifts a car like 3 feet. Pretty awesome. I think it's branded "Michellin".

i got a jack from costco that is low pro (got it for christmas) and works well..

torque wrench is 1/2" drive adn got it from sears like 7 years ago but works great to this day

i've got ramps, can tire jack stands and jack (a few years old). torque wrenches are snap-on.

The princess auto jack is good. DO NOT buy the low profile mastercraft jack from canadian tire, I've gone through 2 of them and Reggie has gone through 4. The mastercraft ones tend to fall and there is a linkage piece where the bottom of the handle meets the jack that likes to break. Looks like this:

Acklands calibrates ours at work......not sure the cost....depending what you have and how much you paid it might be cheaper to buy a new one, we use proto.

+1 I think I have the same one, its been the best jack i've owned so far (other than it is incredibly heavy and you have to be careful that the jack arm doesn't hit your car as it springs back pretty quick).


I personally use mastercraft torque wrenches (i think mine was around $80 on sale), but if you are using it regularly you need to get it calibrated at the very least once a year. As for power fist torque wrenches I have only ever bought their small ones and never used them again as I really don't trust their calibration but that is just me.

Ended up going with the Husky 1/2" Torque Wrench from Home Depot for $90. Seemed like it got decent reviews online and for my casual mechanic use... the price was definitely right.

Still haven't decided on a jack yet although I am leaning towards one of the Aluminum style ones.
