    Re: 2010 F1 Season

Second race was great with lots of battles and lots of passing. But that was primarily due to the rain at the start and the drying track.

When I become benevolent dictator of F1:
    - no budget limits
    - up to 30 cars qualifying
    - fastest 22 cars allowed to race
    - single spec tire (no hard/soft/etc bs) custom designed to last approx 1/2 of a race, a little more if you drive like JB, a little less if you drive like Hammy
    - also, inter and full wet tire options
    - measurable limitation on downforce - a car at X mph can only generate Z amount of downforce (much less than what they generate now)
    - increased mechanical grip through tire compound/size
    - no fuel quantity limits
    - no engine quantity limits
    - no tire quantity limits
    - no ban on refueling
    - 30/20/10 cars shootout format qualifying (30/20/10 minute sessions)
    - no limits on testing

thought the 2nd race was really good, but i agree, it was that good because of the rain at the beginning. loved the part when weber ran into the back of hamilton, thought that was really funny.good to see Kubica finish second as well.

i fear without the rain that race would have been another snooze fest.

you just look at qualifying, there are teams there that shouldn't be. they aren't competitive, and its just proving to be a very expensive way to test. the lower 3 ranked teams would do better with unlimited testing. as it stands they are unable to fully test a car properly as when you dont finish with 20 laps to go you only know what works up on that car to that fail point, anything past that is assumptions. they would do better with unlimited off track testing so that they can run different setups and extensively test them rather than relying on race testing and trying to pull data from somewhere with too many variables, including in this case changing whether

but do you think those bottom 3 teams have the funding for unlimited testing?

              Re: 2010 F1 Season

no. they barely have enough funding to get into F1.
thats why i dont understand this whole push to expand and have a budget cap. It just doesn't work.

There are X amount of teams in F1 and have been for quite a while because it IS a very expensive sport, and when starting out you DO need a lot of time and money for testing.

Its why for the last decade you have seen the names of teams change, but the personel of teams change very little. Its all about experiance, and doing it once so you know it doesn't/does work. A team like ferrari can adapt very quickly to rule changes because they KNOW what does and doesn't work. They've tried things over the years and seen things succeed or fail. New teams with new personal dont have this luxury, and are forced to make money and time consuming mistakes simply to learn and experiance it.

                Re: 2010 F1 Season

I find that boring. The same people, every season. F1 probably pushed for expansion purely on the hope to build hype about something new. There are no 'underdog' stories in F1 and stories like those sell well. I am inclined to agree, I was stoked to see Hamilton become a champ at such a young age. But it is boring, with a few new teams, maybe some sort change would come. But so far, this is not the case.

But I am tired of Ferrari, Merc, McLaren, Renault doing everything. Just boring.

                  Re: 2010 F1 Season

Unless you want to flip the sport on its head and introduce some incredibly random set of rules that dont look anything like what F1 currently is, you will always have the top teams at the top or at least up there.

Like i said its all about experiance. Ferrari, Merc, Mclaren, Renault...they've done it all. They've sat down at the table and done anything and everything over the years to try and shave time. They retain this knowledge so when small tweaks happen in the rules they know what works and what doesn't.

When a brand new team like USF1 comes along, they have to start from scratch, so the deck is already stacked against them. They've gotta go through that 3-6 year teething phase as kovalienin called it before they will become competitive.

The hardest thing for new teams is they have to develop a new car for 2011, while concentrating on improving the 2010 car. This means splitting resources. And until you become extremely well established, this is always difficult.

Was reading this short article. Plans for F1 to add circuits in New York and Russia....

Some of Europe's grands prix may be dropped in favour of races in New York and Russia, according to Formula One's rights holder, Bernie Ecclestone.

The sport's impresario is considering introducing a street race in New Jersey in 2012 and recently revealed he is keen to see one in Russia too, it was reported today.

Ecclestone said there were three potential sites for the race outside Manhattan, while Moscow or the resort city Sochi, site of the next Winter Olympics, were the possible venues for Russia.

"We'll make a decision [about locations] in the next couple of months," he said, according to ESPN.

Ecclestone is keen to expand the calendar from its current 19 events to 20 or more but some of Formula One's established European races, such as those at Valencia and Barcelona, could be dropped.

"We're going to lose some races, for sure. There are some races we can afford to lose without too much problem," he said. "I've spoken to the countries to see what we can come up with."

                        Re: 2010 F1 Season

2010 is finally here with new teams and new rules. After pre season testing, no one can really confirm who truely is the fastest...since no one will confirm fuel loads and set up for each session. My guess is that Mclaren, Mercedes GP, Redbull and Ferrari will be battling every GP until the final race. However, don't discount the small teams like Force India...the are mercedes powered with a set up thats evolving and getting them points. Granted Force India will probably not win the drivers however, they will be around to steal points from the "big 4".

I have a close friend who is a race engineer for Mclaren F1 team and he has suggested that they may not be the fastest....but they do have the most reliable engine on the grid for 2009 and 2010. But new developements are always underway at the factory in Woking Uk by the team so I'm sure the cars will get better, reliable and faster as the season progresses.

My pick for 2010 is for Hamilton to win the drivers and take mercedes to another constructors win. I have been a huge fan for him since his days in gp2. With that being said I will be happy if either; Jenson, Hamilton, Nico and or Schumi win the drivers trophy. On the other hand I hope Massa and Alonso get their egos tangled up in the corners and burn into flames. But thats just one fans opinion. Cya in the paddock in 2010

red bull fastest but not very reliable for Vettel in the first 2 races. and now Alonso's Ferrari crapped out in race 3, with 2 laps to go, i was mad!! but was stoked to see Sutil do good and Kubica having a solid start to 2010.

as nick fry said 'i'd rather have a car thats fast and unreliable than one thats slow and reliable".

reliability can be dealt with relatively easily. finding speed is a whole different ballgame.

they looked like they got their issues sorted. now its up to everyone else to catch them

The front end of Buemi's Toro Rosso disintegrates during Friday practice. See video:

Can't recall anything like this ever happening before. That's massive structural failure just from driving the car.
