  • Lens recommendation?

Andrew, Alex anyone else who wants to chime in

I have a Canon Rebel XS DSLR

I want to buy a decent zoom lens before jetting to europe.. in asia my 18-55 was OK but never could zoom enough on when i wanted it to.

I'm thinking of buying an 18-200mm canon image stability lens but its like freaking 700+
Canon has a 55-250mm which is like 300 bucks which is OK but then i'd be swapping lenses which is a bit of a pain

I was looking online and sigma has an 18-200mm and tamron has a 18-270mm lens! they are cheaper than canon's offerings of course

any thoughts? i'm just shooting environment, buildings, euro cars LOL.. that kinda stuff..

alex you said your friend was a big canon guy?

I have the Tamron 18-270, took it to my home land and took great bikini shots from 10 blocks away! and some from 1 foot away........thats how you judge if a lens is good or not.

18-200mm Canon. I shoot the nikon equivalent and you wont be sorry you bought it. it effectively replaces two lenses in your bag with one that you can use all the time.

          do eeeeeeet.

yea hard to justify the price tho! its more than the freaking camera LOL but i would keep it for a long ass time

the 55-250 would work but swapping would be annoying after 1 day i feel

yup, you'll find that you just won't take the shot because you don't want to swap lenses. Don't forget, you'll keep the lens longer then your body........

I'd sell it and buy disposable camera's......... because any picture you take over their in Europe, won't come close to the caliber of shots you'd get in Vegas..........

trust me. going with the canon is the better choice. the 18-200 is a long term keep lens. once you use it you will wish every lens could be that versatile

                        Re: Lens recommendation?

Sigma 18-200 got decent reviews when it came out and holds an 8/10 on fredmiranda. I would definately be happy with that one.

I got an 18-250 tamron used for just a few weeks ago, I think it was under 3 bills and works great for a walk around.

And I have a 28-75 2.8 tamron as my main indoor lens.

Canons are a bit quieter and might be quicker to focus but most of the time it's splitting hairs for quite the $$ difference. Just do your homework as all the brands have dog models.

                          Re: Lens recommendation?

yea.. leaving in 2 weeks and want to get something still.. the 18-55 is OK but was never great when i wanted it but it did do the job still

the sigma 18-200 isn't priced too bad
the canon 18-200 is still damn expensive 700+
and the canon 55-250mm is only 300ish and from reading reviews its actually better quality than the 18-200mm canon

i'm confused.. i know its not hard to swap a lens but i still think it'll get annoying fast when i'm walking down the street with the damn thing on my back

                            Re: Lens recommendation?

you wont use it on your back.

i state again, the best travel lens is sharp with a large focal change.

the sigma's price is okay, but i find them quite soft. i've never used the canon, but the nikon 18-200 was much sharper than the sigma or tokina equivalents. was it worth the price? it was to me as i didn't want soft shots i can fix later.

long after you've forgotten the price you paid for something you are left with quality and workmanship
