I know! I'm going to do a bit of investigating on this seemingly easy-to-disarm alarm on our cars..

Wow, that sounds really odd. I was going to ask the same question "why didn't the alarm go off?" A volkswagen alarm can't destinguish between a key and a lock puller/breaker thingamajig? I'd say keep us posted but may not be the best idea to post the weaknesses of the system on here. I was contemplating going aftermarket if I bought a new car, now I'm almost sure I will!

Holy crap! That blows! What a stupid alarm. Hopefully though the Imobilizer would work. Theoretically it should not start if they key doesn't contain the chip with the right code, from what I understand. I watched part of that CBC Marketplace documentary on auto theft, and the theives said that the new imobilizers and other theft deterants really do deter them from stealing those cars... but obviously the pro car thief who wants *your* car is probably still able to defeat the theft deterants.

If a thief knows what he is doing and wants your car or something in it, most likely they will always suceed. Sad but true, just hope it does not happen to you.

k guys here is the crapiest thing about VWs and audis.. if you take a flat head screwdriver and put it oh a little bit to the one side of the key hole and jam it in and turn it it will act like a key.. i've seen a zillion audis on audiworld broken into like that i guess VW made a metal piece that surrounds the keyhole and stuff but no idea if it was ever implemented into the cars.. i remember a thread where i guy installed this into his lock

You can always go with the option of removing the lock and putting the passenger side blank in the handle. But this has to be done properly and then you cannot use the window control or if your keyless entry stops working but it is an option.

It's not exactly new. You could break into and steal a MR2 with long sharp hair scissors, and many door locks will turn if forced.

Everyone worries about the locks, but dudes - lest we forget - you have several windows. A piece of porcelain and poof, door open. So why invest in expensive door locks?

Get a good proximity alarm, and don't keep 200 cds + a laptop + etc in your car.

                      More details...

Chris - yah, the same MO was used on my car. Looks like they were targetting our high quality alarms. :mrscrewy:

Anywho, Khryon is totally right IMHO. At least in my case, they seemed to be looking for $$$ and smokes :yahsure: . Upstanding citizens.

Actually the alarm does suck, I tried it out on my car (being very gentle) and I wasn't able to get in but the alarm didn't go off either. I tried this cause I worry about locking myself out. But apparantly the immo is very good, becuase you don't hear about the whole car being stolen very often at least.

To be fair, they are not motion sensors - the alarm is intended to protect against:

                          1) break glass
                          2) open door using interior door latch

which is a pretty "bush league" way to steal a car's contents (not that I know about such things... .

I have heard the Immo is good, which is a comforting feeling - but I think, I, like most, incorrectly feel that an Immo somehow protects our smaller possessions.

Actually our alarm doesn't sense broken glass. It's just door opening.

I took it into Southcentre since it is the closest and was really pleased with the attention they gave me.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same person who broke into our cars. Our neighbourhoods are close enough and with the crappy weather, the conditions were perfect for them to do a lot of cars.

I never leave anything of real value in my car anyway, but they got all my CDs and some other stuff that I'm going to miss. Today when driving to work the realization that ALL of my favorite CDs were gone finally hit me and I was super bummed. The wanker.

Khryon - sorry. I meant to say that they're trying to protect against 1 then 2, not 1 or 2...
