Depending on the Tip you are using and the style of gun, a compressor that can put out anywhere between 5 CFM and 12 CFM.
If you use a smaller compressor and just let it cycle on and off, the paint might dry and not blend properly then end up with dry spray, not a huge issue if your going to wet sand and polish.

An 60 or 80 Gal Compressor typically puts out 10 to 12 CFM.

you need a fairly large compressor. you are going to be spraying for about 30min at a constant rate. you dont want to be stopping and starting and the last thing you want to do is be waiting for air.

even if you rent a compressor for the painting part, that part should only take a weekend

Ya hvlp. I just plan on buying one, they are too much money really. Ya I'll be making a plasic type enclosure in my garage. Indont think that place that Compton posted rents out big enough ones. Still looking around tho.

I am trying to figure out the same thing. I have this compressor http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/...1P/reviews.htm . Does it have enough capacity to paint using a HVLP Gun? I figure as long as I paint by panel it should be ok.

well the only thing about doing that is that. yo7u might not get the same finnish for them all. it would be pretty inconsistent..might not turn out the way you want it really.

see if you can get/rent one or two large fans to draw air out of your makeshift paint booth. ideally you want negative pressure, and for the suction to occur from below, this helps contain overspray and pulls everything down.

otherwise setting up two fans to draw air out of the booth at either end will help keep the overspray from hanging around in the air and settling on everything.

you will likely get some amount of orange peel, its inevitable when you are learning to paint. i painted on and off for 6 months while i was working as a detailer at a body shop because i wanted to learn. i was getting a little better near the end of it, but its still tough.

the most important part however to determining the quality is not the painting itself, its the prep. if you skip steps in the prep, or cheap out on materials, it will come back to haunt you down the road in a big way.
overspray and orange peel can be handled easily with wetsanding and claybars, you cant go back and fix shoddy prep work after the fact without redoing everything again.

painting panel by panel is a PITA. forgetting about the prep work required to do it, getting an even consistent paint on all of the panels when you do them one by one is hard. and more often than not its noticeable when you are done and put everything back together.

you can wetsand and buff between panels to hide the transition a little, but its again added work

Be careful doing it at home, I got caught doing it and I nearly went to jail and fined very heavily. I had painted one of my race cars and got caught just as I had finished. I laugh about it now but when 2 fire trucks and 3 police cars show up it scares the crap out of you. They hauled me into the fire inspectors van and read me the riot act. Just be careful and realize that without being in a proper facility you could wind up in allot of trouble.

                              Re: painting my car..

I might also be doing this sometime in the future.. i've painted before, already have an hvlp gun, but am still unsure on the process. I think I understand the process, but i'm unsure as to certain parts. For example, if I wanted to paint my car.. I should rough it up with something like 400grit sandpaper, fix all the things I need to fix, then spray primer. I'm confused as to how many times is best to spray and wetsand the primer. Then you clean it with a tack cloth, and shoot your base coats.. do you wetsand in between base coats? Do you wetsand the final basecoat before the clearcoat? And as well, do you wetsand between coats of clear or not?

Also, how long do you wait for the final coat of clear to cure before the final wetsand, polish, wax?

If anybody has experience.. i'd really appreciate some info on this. I've been told that in order for it to turn out really well, there is a massive amount of wetsanding to be done, and you really have to nail your prep work. Any painters on the forum able to shed some light?
