This is completely untrue. I have been using my Win 64 Ultimate as a PVR for 8 months now, and it works excellent with my Hauppauge Tv Tuner combo (with remote etc.)

Another pet peeve of mine is people's instant "omg 64 can't do that" or "it's difficult on 64".

Windows 7 has perfect 32bit processing power and even XP mode (virtual pc) if older programs don't work. The world is changing to 64, why stay old school?

I didn't say it wouldn't work, just depending on the hardware config, it may need some extra attention. I do love the 64bit, I use it on my desktop and it way better for some things, just found that media playback was buggy with various media players and trying to find 64 bit compatible codecs. I'm sure everything will work, but how much do you have mess around to get it there. My Hauppage HD PVR and DVS Bridge only works with 32 bit.

What does the 64bit do that the 32 will not do?

don't use 64 bit because many codec's are always expiremental with 64 bit builds.

64 bit is an entire waste of time for an os. higher number doesn't mean better.

wtf codecs are you monkeys trying to use?

i used to use 32bit and 8 months ago made the switch and will never go back.

what can 64 do that 32 can't? Well first it can read my 6+gig's of ram and actually use them instead of only being able to use 3. that's a good start

What do you need 6 gig's for in a HTPC?

wow 6 gig's of ram.... how much of that 6 does your setup actually use?

Hit the nail on the head.

If you have a dual core processor you're essentially wasting it if you're OS is not 64 bit. 64 can multitask way faster than 32.

he doesn't have a grasp of understanding memory allocation and fragmentation. most ppl beleive bigger is better, but if that were the case; we'd be driving around in 20 cylinder engines.

also, he doesn't understand that his 64 bit os is allocating 64 bit memory on unmanaged binaries; so he'll need that extra memory.

and, how many 64 bit binaries is he really running? if it's dedicated media pc, then i suspect he only has an expiremental codec pack installed with windows media center; so not many. but realistically, he doesn't lose any performance and gains functionality by running 32-bit os.

if it's a desktop pc, then i feel sorry for the ammount of free time he must have to put up with poor 32-bit binary performance and unstable incompatibility issues on his 64 bit os.

I'm all for 64bit systems, our CAD Machines at work have 12 Gig's of ram and use a healthy portion of it, there are files we open that kill most machines. I understand the advantages of a 64bit machine, but for watching a movie?

Side Note: I was on the Dell website, there is a $48,000 option to add 128GB Ram, What industry would use that?

Re: With all the recent home theater talk...

yeah cause when you are doing video and photo editing/rendering there is no need for RAM. If i do a batch process of photos (few hundred at a time) i can use 90+% of RAM and all 4 of the cores are usually well above 75%.
It's nice having a computer i can do both that and let it do its thing, and still use at the same time.

you ASSUMED that was in a HTPC, its not. i've only got 2 sitting in that, and even that is prolly overkill for the application but when they sell it in packs for dirt cheap who cares.

again, what codecs dont work for a 64bit processor, i have yet to find issues with any.
as for incompatibility, i've yet to find a single thing that I work with in the office or at home that i have had compatibility issues with. Windows7 seems to have done it right, and got their **** sorted out even before the RC came out, because even when I was on that 8 months ago they had basically everything covered, and if not, it was sorted out within a few weeks.

our geo's use some pretty impressive machines for modelling 3d seismic. don't know the specs on them but i know they pack some serious hardware.

I can't get a MKV file to run in media center. works fine in Media player, Merdia player classic and VLC, just the Media Center.

i dont bother with media centre, i've been running VLC since forever both on desktop and HTPC. that program will play anything under the sun it seems

i don't understand the fascination with vlc. who really wants to use a mouse? ugh

here, if you're having trouble playing any video formats in WMP or Media Center, then uninstall all your codec crap you have infected your system with and install this: http://shark007.net/

windows media center is slow with lots and lots of files because it creates the thumbnails as it reads the folder. it looks nice, but it cost in performance. that's why i made my own media center.

rondal, i agree windows 7 is unreal. i am still running build 7600. i've been running win7 since last february, it's been rock stable.
