Re: With all the recent home theater talk...

i "put up with" a mouse currently because i have an unfinished setup that is about to be taken apart again, and i go through my unsorted and poorly labelled movies and shows in seconds with a mouse. A remote really would take too long.

I literally have 2.5TB of movies and TV shows, none of which is labelled properly, non of which is sorted with any rhyme or reason.

Once i finally get my new setup sorted out I do plan to label things properly and sort them into a catalogue that will work for something controlled via a Harmony One. I dont know what that will look like at this point, my bigger concern is getting my new setup in, TV mounted, and equipment working properly. The rest can come later and over time.

I have over 6TB of hard drive space about 70% is being used so I know what you mean about a mouse being quicker than a remote, is anyone using a Logitech Air? As far as 128GB of RAM some science and medical application require very large amounts of memory for solving complex models. I always turn off page file in the memory setting on all my windows machines this helps esspecially on slow hard drives on laptops so having the overhead is nice because with this configiration if windows runs out of phyisical memory it will crash.

i challenge your mouse navigation against my media center software that i wrote. you can use the fwd rwd buttons of the remote to skip pages, or hit the keys of the letters you want the filename to start with and it'll jump to them. it's waaaay faster then windows media center. it's just not as pretty, but it does the job! and it has a webserver so it is remotely accessable from your phone or remote machines. includes a webcam too, so i can spy on my shiz yo wazzzzup westside!

The only thing I hate about windows 7 so far is that you can only use one audio output at a time. Want audio out on your hdmi and speakers at the same time? nope sorry. Want to switch your audio to a bluetooth headset? go into settings and change the default. Hell I can't even assign one program to output audio on hdmi and another to output via speakers.

i don't have cable tv so it doesn't record, it's not a pvr. it merely allows access to your local media. it also is a front end for nes emulator and mame emulator. and the one feature i enjoyed about windows media center was the Reuters application to watch news, so i built that in there too.

you can download it if u want. there's a new version that i was working on that supports 128 webcams. i'm running it but i haven't put it online yet.

Bumping old, relevant to my interests thread...

I'm looking for a simple media player setup. I'd rather not continue to HDMi from my laptop to the LED.

I have it narrowed down to these: (open to other suggestions as well)
Popcorn Hour C-200 or Iomega SP Director (2TB) or .. ew.... AppleTV

I was also suggested from a friend, to look into the Acer Revo. If I were to go that route, I would front end it with XBMC (which I use on the home PC, and really like)

Dj, I browsed the page for your media center. For MAME, what sort of support? Front End?
Can't download it here as I'm in the Cook Islands.
Lol check these rates: http://www.oyster.net.ck/about/index.php?about=idsl )

                  Currently our home network:
                  Girlfriend Laptop
                  My Laptop (Win7)
Home PC (outdated - XP - HTPC'ing this would be a pricey re-config)

                  Any suggestions welcome

Re: With all the recent home theater talk...

Easiest setup is a modest computer on a wired network with a PS3 and PS3 media server running on your computer. Done.

It transcodes 1080P DTS .mkv's on the fly and plays them in full DTS and HD on your TV.

                          No pissing around with codecs.
No plugging in your HDMI laptop.
                          No watching on your computer.
Ability to turn subtitles on and off.
Can use alternate transcoding methods for stubborn copies.

Popcorn Hour doesnt work with XBMC.
PS3, fair suggestion, but Id have to buy one.. and Id rather build my own.

                            So HTPC it is:
wireless N w/ USB stick (easy)? or just get a card (hard) lol
                            video card: cheap (passive/hdmi)
case? f*ck i dunno.. i keep looking and nothin grabs me ive always used thermaltake..
                            mobo: prolly 1156 ($$$$)
                            cpu: i3 ($$$$)
ram.. (2 gigs).. duh.. dont need more..

bloody mobo & cpu will be $200+.. suppose i should look harder for a deal.. I'd like to get them both for under $125 lol (ya ya ya.. go look on newegg)

so suggestions on mobo & cpu? doesnt have to be micro/miniATX as im gonna get a case that can fit a few hd's

im running XBMC since my original post in here and love it.

instead of a wireless Card to my HTPC i did a wireless N bridge, and then have cables going to my blue-ray player (not needed anymore) and my XBOX360. its way cheaper than 2 cards and is a dream to use.

i run a harmonyONE remote, and have it fully programmed to work with XBMC and its a dream.

i looked into a wireless bridge.. just more clutter on the cabinet.. the woman already has that thing loaded with pictures on 2 of the shelves.. the other 2 are gonna be minimal and clean!!!!! lol

i think im gonna have to just get an N pci card... theres those zotac ones w/ wireless n on em.. but theyre 2x more than i wanna spend on a mobo

sigh, id love to have a harmony one.. instead ima get a MCE one... ive used similar with xbmc.. it'll work fine.

Id "like" to keep this under $400. 5 tops.
