Re: Mister T is going to law school

Ohh cool, I am thinking about going to UBC to do the JD/MBA program possibly after I get my business degree in 2 years. I think they require 164 on the LSATs. But congrats man that is wicked you got into UofA!

You should be making some serious coin with that combo. Just make sure you keep up your marks in the last 2 years. If you're going to take the LSAT's I highly recommend taking the Renert prep course. Aaron Renert was amazing, both as an instructor and as an advisor.

Well ladies and gentlemen, we're at the end of week one. All said, I think I'm going to like it. We've got a really good bunch in our first year class. Everyone seems to be be really down to earth. Good thing, seeing as I'm going to have to live with them for the next three years. The upper year students seem to be the same as well.

I've also got to say, there are some pretty good shindigs as well. I just got back from a first and upper year mixer at Saltlik. I guess it pays to be in a faculty where your events are sponsored by law firms Anyway, I thought I'd keep you all posted now that I've finally started. We'll see if I'm still sane come midterm time in December. However, if all else fails, I figure I can just whip out the Chewbacca defense.

I guess it's good you got your car mostly finished up before heading back! I'm guessing that's a busy year of school.

Yep, that's why I was pushing to get a bunch of projects done before I started. The only one that didn't get done were the rods. However at least I picked up a spare short block AEB in case the unthinkable happens (knock on wood).

No! unfortunatly I was deffered for 1 year, I can reapply in July and I will more than likely apply with CPS at that time aswell as reapplying to the RCMP.

so for now I play the waiting game haha.

If you expect it to happen, odds are it will!

Well, I figured I'd post an update now that I've gotten some time in. It's been a hell of a ride so far. The amount of information that you have to take in is incredible. I'm seriously thinking that I'm at a point where every time I learn something new it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. The funny thing is though, as soon as I have a day or two to decompress, it all starts bubbling up to the surface.

Still, the profs and classroom environment is great. No one here is trying to undercut anyone. Everyone is really supportive of one another. Largely in part because we all feel like we're in the same boat. Really, there's nothing you can do to really prepare yourself for law school. It's not so much a question of knowing the cases. It's more a question of knowing how to apply them and how the law applies them. The only way you can really know that is to make your best guess, learn from the million mistakes that you make and apply what you learn.

I've also shanghaied myself into volunteering for Student Legal Assistance. That's probably been one of the highlights of my time here so far. We're assigned actual cases (under a consulting lawyer) and we go the full nine yards with them. My first case I managed to convince a Crown to withdraw 6 charges against my client and put him in the Alternative Measures Program (AMP is basically community service and such in lieu of criminal charges). Will they all go like this, probably not. However I've learned to take my victories where I can.

Anyway, I've got a legislative drafting assignment worth 30% of my mark that I'm ignoring right now so I'm signing off. Happy trails all and we'll talk to you later.
