  • Toyota has suspended all sales on......

Just heard on the news tonight that Toyota is having a huge problem with that whole stuck accelerator thing, that they have now suspended all sales on the 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, as well as certain 2007-2010 Camry, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra and 2008-2010 Sequoia models. Not to sure on what Lexus brands are also suspended. They also announced that there are 2.3 million cars sold to the public that all need this recall performed. This recall just came after another major recall that Toyota had in 2009 of 4.2 million vehicles for the drivers floor mat interferring with the gas pedal operation (stuck pedal at WOT). Seems pretty coincidental to me. Whats the remedy you ask for the stuck accelerator problem now in 2010? They still don't know what to do. They probably have a solution, but I think the cost is probably to high per unit, and that they are trying to figure out a cheaper solution. This news makes me wonder how Toyota, the 2009 best seller, will make it out of this predicament. I don't think they'll be best seller for 2010... Haha

The mat sticks under the pedal? How come I see lots and lots of techs with cutters going at mats in the future?

The latest recall is not for the floor mat.
The pedal is getting stuck and not coming back up like it should. The obvious solution is to pull all the pedals and put a better design in, but like mentioned that would be costly.

got to love the news and the way they blow it up.

There is a recall but not 100% of the cars listed are effected. The recall is a "bring it in and check it" and the fix in most cases is an adjustment. 1 in 10 units will need a replacement pedal but not as serious as the news makes it.

          Good 'ol media.

The problem is people feel the accelerator pedal stick and they panic.

My bus sticks all the time, you don't see me in a fatal car crash. It is a bit scary when you start picking up speed. But you just pull up with your toe and you are golden. Speaking of which I have got to figure out how to fix that sticking, afraid a buddy will drive the bus at some point in time and crash it.

            What about this.....

Yesterday, Toyota announced they'd stop selling eight vehicles with sudden-fiery-death-accelerator-pedals. What they failed to mention was this is something they were legally forced to do.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration administrator David Strickland, in an interview with The Detroit News, the move was a legal obligation and "We informed them of the obligations, and they complied."

Toyota neglected to mention this in their initial press release announcing the decision. We're guessing this is because no one wants to admit the government made them stop selling the cars over safety concerns.

What remains unclear is why Toyota continued to sell the cars after the recall, if the government stepped in to make it happen, or how Toyota's dealer network is going to react to the way this was handled.

Problem with the accelerator pedal theory is that apparently there was a fatality involving runaway acceleration and the floor mats were found in the trunk of the car as per Toyota's advice.

Its really not as bad as they make it sound. We've had about 120 cars come in today so far for the recall and not one needed to be replaced. They are now thinking 1 in 1000 cars will need a new pedal.

Toyota officially released the recall in december, the govt shut down the plants today, because gm lobbyists got on the govt's case and pressured them too. Toyota was already fixing the problem a few months back.

Question is though, have the cars been accelerating as a result of the pedal sticking, or as a result of a software glitch? Here's the quote from the news story that makes me question the accelerator pedal story

"In the most tragic incident, on the day after Christmas, four people died in Southlake, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, when a 2008 Toyota sped off the road, through a fence and landed upside down in a pond. The car's floor mats were found in the trunk of the car, where owners had been advised to put them as part of the recall.

"There's one thing that didn't cause the accident," said Southlake police spokesman Lt. Ben Brown."

Christopher, read above, toyota voluntarily announced the recall in dec. The NHTSA didn't jump until yesterday. The issue is serious, but the number of cars affected is not as serious as the news makes you think it is. And i know toyota has they're lobbyist's, i'm talking about this particular issue.

So "slam on brakes then turn car off" instructions are to hard for people to follow? That would be my first instinct if my car took off on me, that or "It's rally time!"

This happened to me in my dad's truck when I was 16. Accelerator got stuck, had to weave between a few cars, got into some open space, and did exactly that. Slammed brakes, pulled into emergency lane, turned off car.

I'm with you Stonewall, its dangerous, but it really shouldn't be fatal...

                              from the attached article

According to ABC News last week, drivers reported that their cars started gaining uncontrollable speed even though they took their foot off the gas pedal and applied heavily to the break. Several fatal accidents are blamed on the fault, ABC reported.
