  • Tires

Well I have word the my new car is about 2 months out now, so I am beginning to prepare for its arrival, and one thing that means is I need some new tires!

Now I am going to be doing a 2 wheels setup for the GTI, 18s in the winter and 19s in the summer so I am looking for opinions on what everyone thinks are the best winter and summer tires out there at the moment.

    Re: Tires

Pirelli carving edge are awesome winters and I had Dunlop Graspics when I had the GLI last year and they were very good as well.

I like my Continentals for the summer, good wear and not much road noise.
Current: Golf R and a corporate lease nobody cares about

        Re: Tires

I already have 19s on order, something new and a little different but not crazy expensive and not VMR.

For tires so I am liking the Blizzak LM60s or Dunlop Winter Sport 3D for winter and the Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 for summers at the moment.

Enjoying my Blizzaks from Popp so far a lot better than my old Kumhos.

              Re: Tires

Back in my tire distributor days, I was really impressed with the performance of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta tires. The Finns certainly can make an exceptional winter tire.

Bob has the carving edges on sale for a decent price. Worth calling for a price.

                      Re: Tires

I have heard very good things about these Nokians. We have had man sets of Blizzaks, they also pretty decent.

Where are you ordering from? We got our newest set of Blizzaks for our FJ from Tirerack. **** was cheap! 20% cheaper than popp's deal. Would have liked to go local, but 20% is 20%. That included the shipping.

Just installed these the other day from Tirerack.com Car no longer gets stuck in my cul-de-sac! Would have preferred the Pirelli Winter 210 Sottozero Serie II but could not get these within my budget (tirerack is sold out).

General Exclaim UHP are good for the price, but with less than 20,000km they seem pretty worn out and noisy considering they have the highest thread wear rating, and I drive fairly slow.

                          Performance Summer:
The "No $$$ Limit" Choice - Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
The "Sensible Performance" Choice - Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec
The "I have better things to spend my money on" Choice - Falken FK-452

                          Performance Winter:
The "I regularly plow through snowbanks" Choice - Bridgestone Blizzaks
The "Sensible Performance" Choice - Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3
The "I have better things to spend my money on" Choice - Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance

For me personally, I'm usually in the "I have better things to spend my money on" category. Although the other tires are technically "better"... I just don't drive hard enough or have a fast enough vehicle to appreciate the difference.

FYI. I'm currently running Goodyears all year round (Summer: Eagle F1s; Winter: UltraGrip Performances) and having zero issues.
                          Rob
                          Daddy's "Hooligan" - MK4 R32 in Deep Blue Pearl
Mommy's "Gran Turismo" - E70 X5M in Black Sapphire Metallic

                          GONE... BUT NOT FORGOTTEN:

I am looking mostly at tirerack as obviously their prices are hard to compete with, plus some (Yokohama) are currently on special, and winter tire supplies are beginning to dry up locally.

I have heard good things about the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec but they do not come in 19s and the Yoko's are scoring higher than PS2s on tirerack as well. Bridgestone RE-11s look nice too but are not available in my preferred size.
