  • Anyone here a car deck installer?

Just wondering anyone here knows how to install a double DIN DVD with GPS unit into a MK4 Jetta? Thinking of buying a used deck so thats why I'm asking....futureshop I asked will do it for $150 (if you buy the deck from there, which I won't)

    Thanks

Never done a double din with nav, but could give you a hand if you were so inclined to do it yourself.

i installed my navi using this from the vortex and i didn't know much about decks let alone a navi unit.

the wires you'll need to match are identical. if you take your time and follow the steps you should be good. it took me 6 hours but it paid off. better to do it yourself because there's a lot of messing around behind the cluster and you don't know what other people might mess up. better satisfaction knowing you did it properly.

Re: Anyone here a car deck installer?

I've done single DIN units myself - anyone can do it with some instructions and Google and a lot of patience.

I've also seen some of the shops in town (Soundsaround and Future Shop) butcher people's installs.

Better to do it yourself OR pay for the most qualified (and probably expensive) person you can find. Otherwise, some 17 year old kid will be getting paid $8 to install your deck... how careful do you think he'll be?

Re: Anyone here a car deck installer?

ive installed my decks myself for years, the worst part about putting one in my MKIV golf was i had to take the centre console out which meant the knee bolsters n a whole bunch of effort.

And now its stopped working so ive got to get up enough drive to do it all again :(

the actual changing isnt hard if you are at all familiar with wiring etc and if you can buy a cable harness adapter that goes with your car and your new radio it would be easy peasy. jsut plug n play.

Worth getting the adapter if you can do for sure

I have done tons of installs over the years but time is very tight for me these days. It is almost mandatory to get the right wiring harness though.

i put the nav's in both the vue and the passat....... very easy, just like a single din, only double. You need the proper harness (ie, monsoon, jbl, bose, pre-amped, non-amped etc) and the proper dash/fit kit. Other then that, it's easy, just time consuming...... took me about 4hrs start to finish.

Note: If it's a new in the box unit your installing, and you want it done professionally, CHT will do it for $250-300........

You do need a cage though to get your deck to fit properly. Neither of my DD Avic's came with a cage, so I went to Visions and they just gave me a Kenwood cage and it worked fine. There are DD dash kits out there, just harder to find....

You can hard mount it to the plastic frame, makes it harder to steal but also harder to install as you have to take the lower dash apart.

in the mk4 you can have issues with some plastic structur in the dash if you want it to look flush and factory , And go kenwood or be geh . even lambo has ditched vag componants for kenwoods product now ,

I didn't even use a double din cage, I was so cheap I used weather stripping around my deck and just retrofitted it in.
