      Re: snow!

I dont think its a matter or mandatory driver training. Anybody here watch Canada's worst driver? well apparently half of them took driver training. I'm not surprised. I think the city needs to hire some more competant driving instructors and be a bit more strict when it comes to testing. People seem to have forgotten that driving is a priveledge and not a right.

Mandatory winter tires from Nov -> April, and heavy fines for anyone caught with summers. That's the only solution.

          Re: snow!

getting a license is a little too easy as well though.

I do agree with the some sort of requirement for winter tires.

I don't like the idea of throwing more tax money at snow removal. It won't help! The city is pretty good at cleaning up the major routes, if there isn't traffic jams everywhere. The worst is always the initial snowfall, and if snow falls fast, no preparation will keep the roads clear.

The city (the country really) should put more responsibility back on the driver to do their part in getting through crappy weather. There will always be idiots (and a few honest oops's) that get stuck regardless, but tires are a good start to cut down the number quite a bit.

Guys who leave the heat on recirculate and fog up all their windows from the inside are my next peeve...

            Re: snow!

You know that foggy windows bit irks me as well. Granted I usually crack my sunroof for a vent on the cold mornings to prevent that while the car heats up.

At least we don't get snow like they do out east, I mean Cowtown gets icy. But not really snowy. Think WAY out east, when snow is measured in half metres … Hah hah.

People rag on the city all the time for not getting side or back roads, but think of the overall size and just the sheer amount which needs to be plowed and sanded.

The only issue with that is that you'd then have everybody driving 10+kph over the speed limit everywhere and still tooling their cars into the ditch or through intersections with this stupid look on their face like... whah?... I have winter tires on?... what gives?

I guess you would help the inner city travel problem of people stuck on hills everywhere however, I think that would just eventually translate into a bunch of morons going waaaaaayyy too fast for their own car's capabilities and driver skill level.

Personally, I for one would rather have people sliding everywhere and going really slow in winter... they make awesome pylons!

some sort of basic certification for older cars would be ok if they could make it convienient. Nothing over the top, but check for stuff that will put you in the ditch.

                      Re: snow!

i agree with mandatory winter tires. driver training should be improved and more strict. it should be a 2 part license. i also think there should be mandatory winter driving courses, for everyone. doesn't matter how long you've been driving because it certainly doesn't show on the roads.

technicians at shops also need to be hooked up to a database that links with the police. far to many vehicles go through the shop that the owner does nothing to help his, or others situation, regarding getting your car ready for winter. techs can update the database with those who fail to install adequate tires, and other safety related issues. then the police can pay them a visit at home and require a safety inspection be passed, otherwise you don't get to drive. the onus does need to be put on the drivers and they need to stop relying on the city to make the commute easier. lets remember that the driver/owner is responsible for the safe condition and operation of his/her vehicle.

tires, better training, safer vehicles will result in less accidents, less work time lost, lower taxes, and lower insurance rates.

                      my 2 cents.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

                        Re: snow!

and with no fault accidents. cut that out. if you are involved in an accident and don't have adequate tires, it's your fault. obviously depending on the type of accident. i don't expect to have it be my fault, with crappy tires, if someone ran a red into me.

And that right there is the major issue. Its the exact same thing as the retards in their 4x4 trucks that think because they have 4 wheels drive and are in a big vehicle, they are invincible. As already mentioned, some sort of common sense test would be beneficial. Unfortunately this issue will never be resolved because common sense is not something you can teach so idiots will always be on the road.
