    Re: snow!

i left early and oddly we went out to costco NW last night at 6pm

back highways were a bit ICY.. hit stoney and it was wet! i was doing 100 past people doing 50!! then the best part saw a car rolled into the middle ditch on stoney! no idea how but noone was injured and no ambulance on the scene yet..

came home on stoney too and oddly the other side was a bit icy but fine.. did 100 no problem

get onto highway 2 which by 8pm was completely free of ice/snow and people were doing 50-60!!!! jesus christ i looked like speed demon passing them all doing 110..

fwiw calgary drivers are some of the WORST in the country..just my opinion anyways..

I must have been in a different city then all you guys........drove home at six doing 110 on the ring in NW, then went to Chinook via deerfoot at ten to see Ninja Assassin (Cancel the Oscars, we have a winner) and then went home via deerfoot and ring road all the while doing 110-120.........

          Re: snow!

My views are based on me going home from work at 10 pm

Deerfoot was wet, no ice, no traction issues.
Glenmore was the same, but the offramp to Richmond road was sheet ice.

Memorial, heres another story. Coming down from Barlow towards Deerfoot, skating ring. There were cars sliding sideways going 5, not braking or anything that would cause you to slip. The offramp from Memorial to 19th Street closed due to semi stuck. The on ramp from 19th to memorial was scary as ****. I was crawling (idle speed) and the back end came loose on me , and I had to power through the corner before I got carried down the camber of the slope into the cement barrier. The slope down towards deerfoot looked wet, but touch your brakes and you found black ice.

I recently got some Blizzaks for my wife's AWD SUV and holy sh@t it is amazing. I went back out early this morning to try and hoon it up before the streets in my neighborhood cleared and even though I was trying pretty hard to get it sideways all it did was turn. Pretty impressive. WAY better than my GTi with Pirelli Soto Zeros.

              Re: snow!

I left work at 10.45pm, so I guess I missed all the fun. I had no problems. Did not see what all the fuss was about until I got to 69th SW and saw lots of parked cars and suvs on the side. Stop sign was slippery as hell but just engine braked to stop.

X1,000,000. Where did these calgarians get there license from. Did they even have to write a test? I've lived in Ontario all my life until recently and I have never seen a big city such as Calgary where about 90% of the drivers appear to have an I.Q. of about -10 points. There should be a stupidity fine enforced by the police, and make it an outrageous price so that that they would'nt be able to drive anymore.
I was headed west on Country hills and I was third in line at the stop light at Shagganappi, waiting for the light to go green. For those who don't know...west of Shag on country hills is a huge steep hill to get up. The stupid drivers in front were getting a run at this icey hill at an outstanding speed of 10km/h. Idiots made it up the hill about 1/3 of the way up before they just spun there wheels and could not get any further. I was smarter and waited at the light until the next cycle. Then blew by the morons with ease with a good 60km/h run at that hill.

Nope. It was quite variable as to where you were at. I have studded Hakkas and could not get up the hills near my house.

And here I sit in Edmonton with my new snow tires and we have no snow.....I do remember those Calgary days when it would snow all afternoon and the drive home would be 2+ hours due to the fools blocking the way.

                                Re: snow!

First off the conditions were bad on Friday, no doubt there was serious ice on some roads, especially less traveled ones. I made it home before things were out of control, but the Mrs and I decided to brave it and go out for dinner, luckily we only went 10 blocks away. The way home was still bad, on a flat road from a dead stop applying a little gas (not exactly putting out huge power) the Smart got side ways almost everytime.

My Step-dad was not so lucky, they live in Bridgeland, top of Edmonton trail hill, he could not make it up his street (has a serious hill and is closed often each winter by the city for safety) so he decided to park and walk up the hill and slip on his ass a few times. When he went to collect his car later in the weekend he found it had taken a huge hit to the drivers wheel and then slide all the way down the drivers side (doors will not open) to finally removing the rear bumper. Someone decided to go down the hill Friday night and hit at least 4 cars on the way down, he left a note but I know those are still not in the police figures as they were not reported till yesterday.
