  • snow!

wow... i don't know when i've seen calgary in such a mess! With winters and doing about 5, I was still drifting in to the curb. Stayed off of it somehow.

My poor sister's bus didnt come. By the time I got to her, she had been waiting like 4 hours for bus. Taxi services said they were not taking calls. I couldn't even get in to town to pick her up. Every route from north in to town was blocked by accidents. Tried Centre, 10th, 14th, Crowchild... all accidents. She finally got out on a train and I got her at SAIT. Tried to get he home to the south west, but no hope. Got over to Sarcee and that was closed, so no way to get from north to south. Home now at 11:30 and it looks like its melting a bit, but wow. What a gong show!

I think I passed about 50% of the city bus fleet pulled over out of service.

I got out of the office a bit earlier today so I probably got lucky (I rely on the highway). I had my 2wd truck so I was struggling a bit, that sounds like a really crappy night for you though!

there were a few spots today where the roads may have been at fault. I was nervous in a few spots.

that said, there were piles of stuck cars that I drove by no issue too. Winters should really be mandatory.

              False sense of security …

Granted it's hard to fathom just how some of the mistakes were made this evening. Especially since I spent the better part of two hours standing still.

Granted every once in a while I'd torque steer a bit. Usually if I eased off the clutch at 900rpm instead of ~750. Hah hah.

My wife and had 4x4 out of sarcee going up the hill from 16 th and bail on my work x-mas party; because so many could not make it up the hill it was a parking lot. In fact any hill around the nw had issues. It's been a while since I have seen traffic like that.

It WAS slippery last night. I live at the bottom of the hill below Market Mall. l of the rods were closed off by 8 pm last night going up the hill. You needed studs and 4WD to get up. You could have skated down the hills.

I know driving west on 17th Avenue towards Crowchild last night was slow moving and a sheet of ice. I watched many a trick occur last night, at one point I saw a guy in what looked like a Jeep Commander slide sideways down a side street towards 17th Avenue only to spin around forwards, bounce off the curb and continue sliding sideways, he then somehow managed to spin 180º and nearly crash into a line of parked cars. I know that downhill slopes were treacherous last night and all, but if someone decides to hit the slope with reckless velocity it's no longer just environmental.

I couldn't even get through hidden valley without having to wait! Up by the schools a city bus tried to pull out, got stuck blocking a lane at a 45degree angle because if he tried to pull out any farther he would have slide into a parked car! I think the bus was there for another 3 hours before they finally just brought a tow truck in to move the car.

                          Re: snow!

My father mentioned on Centre Street there were close to double digits of buses on the side of the road just parked (no doubt by order of the city), but he said there was a jack knifed bus which took the cake for him. My favourite bus related info from yesterday was on 53rd Street just north of John Laurie. A school bus going north, had hopped the median, and a transit bus going south had also hopped the median. They had a head on collision on top of the median. There was also a sandwiched van I believe.

Oh, and tomorrow is still supposed to hit 8º for the Grey Cup. Yay!

Driving home yesterday 17th avenue going west crossing the deerfoot a lot of people were giving r down the downhill and sliding all over the place. Lots were hitting the curb since it was so icy. People just need to be more careful and have more patience around these conditions. It's better to get home later and safe than trying to get home early and get into an accident or not get home at all due to an accident.

I was going maybe 5kph down that hill with my foot on the brake and about 30 feet behind the person in front of me that kept on spinning their tires.

I know I took my time getting to Wild Rose, just to wait it all out. It took two hours or so to go from downtown to Currie Barracks, and about 35 minutes to then get home later. All the way to Citadel.
