I notice cars are usually pictured with crappy/rundown backdrops.

Is this the same as the fat chick phenomenon - where a girl gets a fat girlfriend in order to look hotter?

Would having a nice backdrop take away from the car?

I don't think it has anything with the photographer/car owner, wanting to inferiorize the background in comparison to the car, as much as your thought is full of pessimism.

- pictures of good looking cars in ghetto/slum like environments to make the car pop out more???? might be what causes me to ask this.

sometimes it's the other way, the car ruins the backdrop, I'd rather look at the scenery instead of the car (car becomes the fat chick).

I think it's for contrast more then anything. The "Slum" background with a hot car is to focus on the niceness of the car and not so much on the background. Just my 2 cents.
