  • iSCSI corruption

I know that there are some network guys on here so I will toss out an issue I am having....

    The Gear
-Dell PowerEdge 2950 Server running Win2K8 64bit (fresh install & patched)
    -Microsoft iSCSI Initiator
-Cisco Managed switches with a 4 fiber channel VLan between the switches
-Promise M610 VTrak array with 16 X 1.5 TB HDD (setup up as a 15 drive Raid 5 with a hot swap spare)

When I write data to this volume I get errors in the windows system log about corrupt file system that I am not able to repair with chkdsk e: /f.

If I pull the Promise box off the network and just connect it directly to the NIC of a test box running Win2K8 I can read and write to the volume just fine with no corruption errors....After testing it like this for 2 days...back onto my network and bang the corruption begins again. I have replaced all the patch cables with new Cat 6 cables and I have a Fluke Network Analyser which I used to test the cables as good. I was starting to wonder if the switch is the problem but there are no errors in the log files.....I may just temporary replace it with an old D Link 1 GB unmanaged switch I have for testing purposes.

Any ideas what to troubleshoot next or what might be causing the file corruption issues?

I forgot to add that the Promise box was set to GPT and the allocation size set to 64k when I formatted the volume.

    Re: iSCSI corruption

well first off your issue is that promise POS array.. those things are the biggest POS you can get.. end rant

do you have an etherchannel to the array? or any sort of teaming over the iscsi nics?

is the array and the iscsi itself in the same vlan or separate?

how you should have it setup..

server vlan-- server nics -- server ip.. ie 192.168.1.100
iscsi vlan - iscis nics-- iscsi ips.. ie 10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2 and set for round robin and no gateway/routing allowed

update the firmware on your promise unit too

pps.. sometime soon i'm going to force delete any computer related questions from these forums because i really dont' want to look at my car stuff and see work

Yes...they are a low end piece of equipment but I do like them better than the Dell PowerVault I dumped $20K on!!!!

do you have an etherchannel to the array? or any sort of teaming over the iscsi nics?

I am not teaming the NICs

is the array and the iscsi itself in the same vlan or separate?

The Vlan runs between the 48 port Cisco switch in the server room and the 24 port Cisco switch in the office.
The servers and the arrays are all connected to the same 48 port switch. There are 2 Nics in the server....Nic1 is set to X.X.0.X and Nic 2 is set to X.X.3.X
All the IPs on these devices are static and the only device I am round robining is the Dell PowerVault. No gateway is set on anything except for the server. I also have 4 other Promise boxes setup this way and they have been running for 4 years without any data corruption. (There is a DC and a BDC...1 runs 4 Promise boxes and the other runs 2 Promise boxes and the Dell PowerVault)

how you should have it setup..

server vlan-- server nics -- server ip.. ie 192.168.1.100
iscsi vlan - iscis nics-- iscsi ips.. ie 10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2 and set for round robin and no gateway/routing allowed

update the firmware on your promise unit too

I did....The lame WebPam software does not do it even though it is a menu choice...had to use a TFTP session. I was 2 releases down from current.

        Re: iSCSI corruption

hrmm.. may have to call promise support then

seems wierd.. sounds like you have it setup OK then

i've got clients with promise arrays and yes they are low end but way cheaper than a netapp plus 10x the storage so it wins still

        anyways

update the nic drivers on your server..

are jumbo packets setup for the nics or anything like that?

other than that i'd call the vendor and ask whats up

or try reformatting the array again

PM me if you like man

I see you have a Fluke instrument. I wish I could have sit in on the meeting, when they named the company.

"Hey bill, what you want to name this company?"
"Well jim, we stand for industry leading metering devices, so Fluke?"
          "Works for me"

            I could understand this:

better than I could understand what you just wrote.
