  • Media Center VS. Popcorn Hour

    Media Center - 1
    Popcorn hour - 0

1080P Youtube is great, but only available on a dedicated computer.

On November 18, 2009 Syabas, makers of the award-winning Popcorn Hour product line, uploaded a message to their Media Service Portal that said,

“As of Wednesday, December 2, 2009, YouTube will no longer be available to Popcorn Hour users.”

    lol who cares rob

i don't give 2 shits about youtube on my tv

my popcorn c-200 plays what i want..

i curled wednesday night so i borrowed glee, modern family, criminal minds all in mkv.. few mins to upload to the unit.. blammo they play

got a ton of 1080p movies with full HD sound in them.. blam the mkv files just play

thats all i bought mine for .. playing movies and tv shows.. thats it thats all

i dont' care about trying to self record **** or play youtube crap.. my xbox 1 could do that and i didn't even use it ever

i'm almost going to cancel my bell completely especially if the crtc doesn't get thier head out of thier asses and then all the canadian channels pull away from bell and shaw.. that'll be fun times

ps.. pulling youtube on dec2 probably means a firmware or apps update for me.. and open source means more better features

Re: Media Center VS. Popcorn Hour

I was looking at a popcorn hour but only to add on to my existing setup (use as an extender) I wouldn't (and honestly couldn't) replace my media center with one.

Ryan, everything you mentioned your popcorn hour does a media center can handle just fine. (Including MKV files).

Honestly I still like the fact that it manages your tv also, as it eliminates an overpriced proprietary PVR, it takes control of all the guide functions, controls etc. I can control the set top box (in my case shaw satellite) from my 360 which eliminates the need for another set top box.

I know more people are getting rid of their cable/sat but for me, I like having it, I like having the ability to surf and recording shows is really easy and simple to playback. If I download a show it's just because I missed them.

jason but does your media center do full DTSHD or dolby digital HD out to your receiver? not sure if soundcards even do this nowadays.. haven't looked up htpcs in a loooooong time

and can your video card on the htpc fully do 1.3a hdmi with 1080p 24b support?

Re: Media Center VS. Popcorn Hour

I'll have to look at the exact motherboard specs later (can't remember my exact model anymore) but I have HDMI out and 5.1 optical output, the 7.1 board was a bit more at the time so I didn't go for it as I don't have any 7.1 setups in my house right now.

Also, most probably already knew this but tonight I learned that the new windows 7 media center will play a VIDEO_TS folder which is pretty convenient.

Re: Media Center VS. Popcorn Hour

            thats cool

for 5.1 tho does it actually do the true HD formats or just OG dts and dolby 5.1?

i'd be curious .. my popcorn has fed DTS-HD and dolby HD right to my receiver with 0 issues which made me pretty pysched.. well really not that i can tell HD audio over regular LOL

I have the WDTV Live & have been streaming from my server & have been loving it. It will pick up content from any device your network & stream it to your TV.

Does Youtube & Internet radio too, but I have not been too into that. The price was right at $140 at Memory Express.

I was playing with the Windows Media Center in Windows 7....All the internet TV shows are blocked based on my IP Geolocation. I tried using a proxy server in the US and found that I could see Hulu the connect was very slow. Anybody got a work around for this foolishness?

Can't find where it says the version, I'm assuming it's 1.3, Not all the channels are in Dolby Digital, but most of the HD ones are, the receiver displays the input source type, most mkv movies are in 5.1.
