  • Upgrading to Windows 7: Questions

I currently have a copy of windows 7 on hold because I was thinking of upgrading my Media center which currently runs Vista Ultimate.

My question is, it's the full version and I've noticed some places are selling an "upgrade", will the full version allow me to upgrade the current OS while keeping my data intact? Do I need to buy the "upgrade" instead? Or should I just move all my data off and start from scratch? (not impossible but a bit of a pain). If all goes well I'm thinking upgrading my laptop down the road also.

    Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. Lets try to have one computer related thread not turn in to a PC vs. MAC debate, just download the commercials if you feel the urge.

    Start from scratch.
The format takes 10 mins, it keeps your drivers aswel. Just back up your stuff
I did it, worked great, I just dont like Windows 7, so i downgraded to XP.

Oh really? I know a couple people that have been using it for a while and they really seem to like it. I have no opinions other than I want to get rid of vista and hopefully clean up my Media center a bit. Also, it sounds like sharing is done a little better in 7 also which would be a bonus for me.

Yeah lot of people like it better, I have a problem with "change" so I like to keep things as is for now. Windows 7 is brand new, I'll wait until all the bugs are fixed and service packs are released. Maybe 1-2 years...then I'll change to W7. Sharing is a bit better Yes that is correct.

Fair enough, If I was still XP I wouldn't be so quick to want change either, but I don't really want to pay to go BACK to xp.

I just like the hasslefreeness of a legit copy. Unless you mean my vista license would be compatible.

Vista license wont be compatible. I downgraded from Vista to XP, it's a hassle really, gotta find drivers for XP and its hard to find that on some machine if they came with Vista originally.

jason 7 is well worth it compared to vista.. i've been using 7 beta to final for months now.. the final 64bit ultimate is pretty damn good..

they stole features from osx which is fine anyways but its much better than vista ever was.. its not mac but its TONS better than any previous MS offering

if you buy the full deal disc you should be able to do an upgrade or start from scratch

if you buy an upgrade disc you NEED to have vista on a machine then upgrade it from there..

i'd probably just pay for the full copy and then if you needed to down the road you can build a machine from scratch..

omg i LOVE 7. been on it for 6 months now and it is amazing. it is well worth it to do the clean install and just have everything on backup HD that you can reload.

i couldn't imagine running a different OS anymore, and it pisses me off that i have to use XP at work. the taskbar alone is worth the switch

Well, I picked up a copy of premium. I wanted Pro for the RDP capability but supposedly you can RDP in to a copy of premium just can't RDP from. So I'll install Pro on my laptop some time down the road.

Bought the OEM from Memory express so no upgrade capability only fresh install but was way cheaper.

                      Thanks for the opinions.

Just FYI windows 7 should be able to upgrade from Vista but has to be fresh on XP. Course, you'd be f'ing insane to upgrade. Just copy your data to an external (you should be backing up to one anyway!)

Retail version has both 32 and 64 bit (so if you get a new comp you're good to go) so I'm debating oem vs retail since I dunno when I'll jump to 64bit.

Well looks like I'm going back to return it, I was fairly certain that you needed pro to host rdp but memory express assured me premium could host. I wasn't able to confirm because I was standing there waiting to buy it. Did some more looking and premium does not support rdp host. I remember when you could call those guys and get good info, the last few times I've phoned they've been totally wrong.

I have backups of most of my stuff already but with it recording tv and whatnot I didn't want to lose that stuff but it's not that important.

Those guys from there are a bunch of idiots and provide you with the wrong information. It's rare when I get someone that knows what they're talking about.

When you format do a 60-100G C: partition, the rest data on D. Then you can format/change os/whatever and it doesn't really impact you.

Personally I'd us the op to buy another 1T drive for 99 bucks but I'm always after space.
