I actually run winter tires that are the same width as my summers -- 235-40-18's

Really when it comes down to it, the weather in Calgary usually has weeks and weeks of no snow/dry roads in the winter and then when you add in the chinooks -- it's nice to have wide sticky tires all year round.

I'm not entirely sure on this but I think if you hit a deer then insurance rates dont go up, but i've never filled a claim like this (hitting a tree/slippery road) so I may be wrong
The wife took the Vue swimming during that freak rain storm 2 years ago and flooded the engine with water logged it.........long story short, Insurance took care of entire $12,000 new engine bill as a "act of nature" and we didn't pay a penny, not even deductible and rates have never gone up since. (in fact they came down 6 months later.)

Oh... I'm used to them alright (ie. 2nd winter on the 225/40R18's). Unfortunately, I don't think my neighbours are used to a flapper-modded .:R screaming sideways down their lonely neighborhood streets as I enjoy some fresh powder on my early morning Tim's run!

My second favourite is racing Ford, Dodge and Chevy 4x4's from street light to street light on whatever road I happen across. They've got nothin' on this little 4-Motion!

You should drive an old 86 Quattro....it would really make you rethink how good 4-motion really is

man this thread just turned into a "how to drive in winter" thread.

                      Only if its an RS4.

Keeping with the overall thread (sort of...) how does X-drive compare to the haldex and torsen based systems. I don't know much about x-drive at all. Is it similar or something completely different? I've got my parents thinking of perhaps the new X3 when it finally does come out.

The summary I've picked up is Audi system is better, at least on cars. X on 3/5 series is a compromise of everything (height, mpg, weight, accel).

Subaru is almost totally mechanical so it's idiot proof and easier to fix but less refined so you guzzle more gas.

Let us know the final tally. My guess is $9,000 parts/labour.
