Winter tires are NOT EVER worse on ice than all-season or summer tires! The tread composition is MUCH MUCH softer than any other tires and will grip the ice better, also they have many more sipes that will wick away the film of water from between the ice and the tread.

If your logic was true, then full race tires would be best on ice! Don't even think about it. That is just dangerous thinking.

Winter tires are the BEST at any temperature below about 7C (yes, that's plus 7C).

Also it should be noted that the BEST tread tires go on the BACK. AWD, FWD, RWD, doesn't matter. Best/most tread on the back. Your ratty bald tires you keep putting off replacing on the front.

i'm driving down deerfoot doing 100 on a slick surface i floor it in 5th and easy spin my tires to 200. its greeeeeeeat. during winters where there is decent traction my fronts stay spinning 20-30km/h faster than i'm actually going for maximum acceleration. also, its amazing how high you can kick up fresh snow thats just fallen going really really fast lol. you know those snowfalls 2-3am virigin lanes no other cars. i get that stuff like 50ft into the air behind me lol

anyway no asr/esp for me don't need that stuff. here are my winter driving tips:

1) be careful on on/off ramps, turns in general take it slow
2) on straights test the surface by gassing it see if your speedo jumps, same with brakes, see if your car can slow down fast enough or if the abs kicks
3) you CAN go fast on straights on slippery roads permitting you don't do anything abrupt, no sudden turns or lane changes
4) make sure you have some good winter tires!

see my problem with winter driving is not my own skill/driving

i know how to winter drive.. i grew up in rural alberta with zero plowing and a RWD buick with cdn tire tires.. i know how to handle it..

my problem.. ESPECIALLY in calgary is the fockers around me not knowing what the hell they are doing.. i'm scared of the idiots out there.. not myself.

ps.. ask turbo meyers (chris) about how we grew up driving and he will tell you the same

Sure, in a beater....just not in a "it'll cost $10 k to fix the fender" car.....

My 19 year old son drove his car into a curb the other week, on dry pavement, collapsing the front suspension. He's riding the bus now.

I consider myself the man. Sure sh!t happens to everyone, the difference is how smart you are about it. I hit a curb just the other day sliding down a hill (sliding very slowly). Only difference is I was smart/skilled enough to hit the curb on a controlled angle so I wouldnt do any damage to the car. How many idiots would panic and just let it slide into the car in front of them???

what i was trying to say is that because winter tyres tend to be narrower for digging into the snow for optimal traction this actually has a negative effect on handling on ice compared to a wider tyre of the same build, ultimately on ice traction is postively related to surface area.

While it might seem logical it's incorrect. Ice is not that slippery. The thin film of water that forms on top is what causes the loss of traction. The friction of the tire creates heat which melts a thin layer causing it to be slippery. This is why the key feature on winter tires is sips and tread grooves to move water away to get at the rougher surface below. Think of it as many microscopic hydroplanes. You can see this by driving on a bald winter tire - even with the better compound, it's still no where near as effective as a newly treaded tire.

A wider tire has the same flaws as you would expect a wider tire to have in a pool of water. It also gets hotter near the center as opposed to the outer edges so narrower means cooler.

Actually he's right. Ice isn't that slippery, compared to the film of water that forms on top of it. Think ice skates versus just walking on ice in winter boots. Same ice, but since the skates focus the pressure on a tiny part, causing the ice to melt and the metal to glide on the film of water, versus your boot which would spread the pressure out, and allow the water to escape into the small voids in the tread (the sipes).

Did you ever notice that you have a LOT more grip on ice when it's really cold out versus just around zero?

Just basic physics.
