It's interesting how you can also see the time shift between the photos as well. While downtown seems to be from around the Stampede, the far NW looks to be even more recent. There was a little snow on the ground in one area.

Thinking back you're right, I remember hearing it on the radio in the summer how the streetview cars were being spotted, hitting downtown later would make the most sense.
