No mention of the mid-to-late 90's crapbox cars like the cavalier and sunfire which took GM quality to an all time low to compete with the likes of hyundai (who is now kicking their ass). I've never been in a car with a worse interior than a 99 cavalier.

The H1 never hurt their reputation.

            I disagree

I agree with MusicalGenius, every single Hummer was another nail in GM's coffin.

They remind the public of GM's utter disregard for bigger issues in the public consciousness, regarding the environment and points to GM"s inability to read and act upon the current zeitgeist.

Joe Q Public can't differentiate between Hummer models and without a doubt looks at the H1 and H2 with a sense of distaste and annoyance as it takes up 2 or more spaces at their local mall -- or when some wannabe rapper/gangster goes cruising with their Hummer and it's 22 inch gold spinners and their thumping bass.

Don't forget having various SUV's of almost identical build and size across multiple brands.

I would say this hurt them much more.

                    Gangster never buy H1's.

I do not understand why they scrapped Pontiac. They spent all of that money, redesigning their entire car line-up, the entire G-series, the new Solstice. Then they go and scrap it. Yet they keep making the H2 and the H3 and introduced the H3Truck which is just a Canyon with a different body on it. Scrap Hummer and keep Pontiac. But that might actually make them some money, and that just wouldn't be sensible.

I really liked the G8 and the G6.

Yes, pontiac redid their entire lineup, however they didnt do it soon enough.

Why would GM kill themselves to save their branch(pontiac)?

Well GM isn't a brand. GMC is a brand, so killing hummer wouldn't be killing GM. Not killing hummer and killing pontiac is killing GM.

Kill GMC, they don't actually make anything that Chev doesn't make. But it is older than both, therefor for nostalgia sake, you kill the only one coming close to making money in order to save the dying brand.

If I were GM I would just stop-production. Lock the doors and completely restructure. Close a bunch of plants, break the unions, make everything in Asia. As so far the Asian stuff has a much better quality record than the good 'ol MADE IN THE USA.

I would guess that it was a combination of the fact that they have been competing against themselves for the past 25 years and that they consistently build cars that are unispired. (with the exception of the 3 new Saturns) If you get into a Pontiac G8, which is a good looking car and for all intensive purposes should be a fun car, You step on the throttle and Bwaaaahhh, The engine doesn't rev, and the tranny shifts too soon, Boring...

Make something fun and practical and you'll sell cars....
