the SB600 is CLS compatible, its what I currently use as my remote flashes triggerd via CLS. But it cannot be used as a commander unit from the camera. Only the SU-800/SB-800/SB-900 can do that.
The commander gives you slightly better range with CLS, and allows you to control 3 groups (A,B,C) of flashes instead of the two that the camera itself can only control.
