Re: I want to get into photography....

I've done some photo simulations at work, and being close to what your eye naturally sees is an asset for that stuff.

Went and snapped this last night with the bimmer boys.
Should have remembered my polarizer so i could knock out that hotspot on the windshield. Lighting there was horrid for trying to shoot under.

i have a polarizer. I haven't really had a good application for it yet. That there would have been a good place to have one though.

oh there are tons of applications for a CP.
its scary the difference they can make. if i am shooting with any kind of sun, or reflective objects like cars, water, etc, i use a CP.

Re: I want to get into photography....

As for polarizing filters I ALWAYS keep one with me. Virtually any outdoor shot benefits from a polarizer. More saturated colours, lower reflections, and control over what light get in. Granted if the light outside is overcast and grey it's not worth it (except fro rare occasions). As well as at night, although with a small enough aperture and long enough shutter speed it can sometimes even help there.

The only time I would never use one, is for wide angle landscape shots. The sky ends up being black and blue within the same shot. Well that is if you have a circular polarizer instead of a natural density graduated filter.

yeah sometimes it can be the look you are going for, othertimes it looks like crap on a wide angle

Bingo, as for portraits it can also eliminate some glare and hot spots if someone has oily skin or even if it's warm and they have a bit of a sheen going on.

Well that's fun, I just found out that the shipment of 50D's that Canon is sending their Canadian supplier for the DEPP has been delayed another two weeks or so. Thankfully I've still got a reserve of patience, but only so much. Hah.

I absolutely hate this thread & what it does to my wallet.
I definitely love how it instantly fills my Camera bag with all these wicked tools.
I guess I'm going back to The Camera Store to purchase myself a set of Polarizers for my setup.

My advice would be not to cheap out on a polarizer, but it's also not necessary to get a B&W filter right off the bat. Learn to use it before you get a high quality one. Hoya makes good quality mid range ones.

Some more questions needing answers or suggestions...
I've got an idea on what setting I plan to calibrate my camera.

What would be a better lens to shoot cars @ car shows, obviously without much of a backdrop?
What would be a better lens to shoot cars with the B.C. landscape as the backdrop?
                              Lens 1: Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II
                              Lens 2: Canon EF-S 18-200mm IS f 3.5-5.6

What settings should I calibrate the Canon 50D?
                              Aperture Priority?
                              Shutter Priority?
                              Aperture Setting?
                              Shutter Setting?

I shoot pretty much everything on full manual. Shutter priority for sports. I just tend to shoot Manual, and then Bracket occasionally.
